T-Mobile and Orange were today given the go-ahead from the European Commission to complete their proposed amalgamation.
Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom were told of their success so both companies can now get started on the finer details of the new UK merger – expected to be completed in the spring.
Gervais Pellissier, deputy chief executive of France Telecom, said he was delighted the agreement had been confirmed and it would offer "high quality" services to consumers.
He added: "This clearance will allow us to create a strong operator and to offer high-quality network and services to our customers."
After the amalgamation of the two networks they will have 29.5 million UK customers between them, but both brands expect to operate as individuals for at least 18 months after the competition of the transaction.
This news comes after T-Mobile recently reported its "best ever" December on record.
