Google ‘looking to boost advertising with new phones’

Google’s main aim when it introduces new handsets to the market is to increase its advertising, according to one industry expert.

James Atkinson, editor of Mobile – a fortnightly magazine – said the company’s "end game" is to have people look at more and more of its adverts, however he wouldn’t bet against it producing a device to rival the Apple iPhone.

He added: "Who knows with Google? They always have that ability to suddenly change direction and come up with a surprise like the iPhone."

Mr Atkinson was unsure why it even needed to bring out a phone of its own because it is not a "real competitor" for selling handsets.

His comments come after findings by stock analysis service Trefis predicted Google will sell around five million mobiles in 2010.

Partnerships with Vodafone and Verizon could have an impact on its sales and the Google Nexus One smartphone is forecast to make up 0.4 per cent of the 1.3 billion mobile phone units sold this year.
