Google could be close to creating a handset that would "jump the market" in the way that the Apple iPhone did, according to an industry expert.
James Atkinson, editor of Mobile – a fortnightly magazine – said if the service provider was to add Google Voice to its phone then people could make international calls for around a penny a minute "or less".
He added: "They’ve also bought this company called Gizmo5, which has developed some technology which connects Google Voice to VoIP [Voice over Internet Protocol]."
But, Mr Atkinson said the real question was what the service provider – who produced the Nexus One – actually wants to do in the mobile market.
His comments came after a survey by Nielsen Research – commissioned by telecommunications equipment manufacturer Tellabs – found the BBC, Google and Facebook could be "the most appropriate" mobile service providers.
In addition, findings included 63 per cent of people stating they wanted internet facilities tailored to their own personal preferences within the next six months.
