Future phones to all use one standard mains charger

Phones to have standardised chargers in futureYou know how annoying it is when you lose your charger for your phone? You search for hours, only to completely fail to find it, and then decide you’ll try your old charger. And then you realise that your old charger was for a different make of phone altogether, so you’re stuffed, really.

Well, according to Engadget Mobile, situations like that could soon be a thing of the past, because all of the big phone manufacturers have now got behind a plan to standardise mains chargers for their phones.

The move to one standard charger’s been pushed for by the EU for quite some considerable time, and now that the big names have got behind it, it can surely only be a matter of time before it happens. But who is going to be backing it? Well the names that have popped up so far include such mobile giants as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments. Apart from HTC, that’s pretty much everyone.

Now, the standard fitting they’ve all agreed on is micro-USB, which I have to admit, is a bit annoying , since my current phone is only mini-USB, and I was hoping I could be tight, and not have to buy a new charger, eventually. However, from a business point of view it does make sense, since there are already some phones on the market that use micro-USB. I’ll just say the words Nokia N97, and we’ll leave it at that.

Of course, it also makes sense if a phone being ecologically sound is an important consideration for you. One standard charger means not having to bin your old one when you get a new handset. And, the final thing, you can then use just one cable to link up to both your PC and the mains. Stick it in the PC for syncing your phone, and whack it into a 3-pin adaptor, to stick it in the wall.

Sorted.

So, the future, it seems, is micro-USB-shaped.

Course this probably means they’ll stop bundling mains chargers with phones so you have to buy some form of plug adaptor separately. And Apple agreeing to make something that works with other manufacturers devices? Pah! I’ll believe that when I see it.
