Femtocell adoption will increase "dramatically" across the world in the next few years, one industry expert claimed yesterday (January 21st).
Simon Saunders, chairman of not-for-profit firm Femto Forum – which was set up to promote femtocell deployment – revealed that only ten operators are currently offering the service.
However, he explained that the sector is likely to pick up pace rapidly as consumers and businesses realise the value of effective voice coverage in homes or offices where signal strength is weak.
He said: "Femtocells have been causing a major stir in the telecoms industry as they represent a major new opportunity for economically delivering increased mobile broadband coverage and data speeds."
Mr Saunders was responding to this week’s news that Vodafone has re-branded its femtocell offering as Sure Signal and re-launched it at a cheaper price than before.
Mobile phone RF transceiver IC specialist Lime Microsystems also announced recently that it is developing a reference platform for femtocell designs.
