Ah, Doom. The game that, along with Wolfenstein 3D, really kicked the First-Person-Shooter genre into the highlight. Those were the days; I can remember sitting at my cousin’s PC (that was way before I got a PC of my own, when I was still using an Amiga), merrily running away from big monsters, showing off my immense cowardice. With the lights off, so I scared myself.
Well, thanks to one very enterprising dude, you may very well be able to play Doom on the Palm Pre, when it gets released. And if you want proof, here’s a (very) short snippet of it in action:
Actually, what it is is PRDoom, an open source version of the original game. And it seemingly took a fair bit of work and hacking to get it working on the Palm Pre. But, before you all write it off on that score, remember that once one person has figured out how to do it, it should theoretically get easier to do in future. And the Pre has an app store (along with everyone else in the world… it’s true what our news section says, maybe app stores are the future). And you know Doom would sell by the absolute bucketload if they put it on there.
My only complaint? That keyboard is fine for messaging on (even with my big hands, I’m used to using phones with not-that-big keyboards), but I imagine it’s not going to be that easy to use the teeny keys to make a space marine run around unloading shotgun shells into nasty, big-clawed, Martian demon-mutant things.
So, I’d suggest simplified controls. I’d also suggest Palm officially get this on their app store ASAP.
Now, we just need to convince Microsoft to somehow port Halo to mobile phones…
Are you a Doom fan? Would you play it on the Palm Pre? Leave us a comment and have your say!
