Cyber-Shot mobile phones go off-roading with the Sony Ericsson C702

sony ericsson c702 water-resistant mobile phoneI’ve been meaning to write a bit of a blog posty thing about this particular mobile phone for a while, now, since I reaaaaaally like the sound of it. It’s a phone that answers the question no-one’s asking; what happens if you mate a Sony Ericsson Cyber-Shot phone with a off-roady-type, tough-esque, water-resistant phone? (Look, this is just the kind of thing I think about, alright, along with the question of what would happen if mobile phones rose up and rebelled against their human masters…)

Well, we now have an answer (no, not to the evil phone rebellion question, obviously), because they’ve done just that with the Sony Ericsson C702, the first ever water-resistant Cyber-Shot phone seen in the UK.

So, first off, to judge the phone on its own merits, and its feature-set, before we get into the whys and wherefores of why it’s cool.

First up is the camera. Yes, it’s 3 megapixels, which is really good, but that only tells half the story, since it’s also packed with Cyber-Shot technology (giving it things like image stabiliser, ace night mode, and so on), which automatically makes it better than just about any other 3 megapixel camera phone out there. And then, there’s the matter of GPS. As in the Sony Ericsson C702 has it, letting it not just tell you where you are, but also geotag your photos (add location tags to them, for mapping exactly where on the planet the photo was taken)

But now, on to the best bit…

Take another look at the picture of the phone, just up there…

It’s a camera phone. In a puddle. How cool is that?!

You can approach it from either direction. Think of it as a tough phone, like the JCB phone, that they’ve welded a top camera and GPS onto it. Or think of it as a super-powered camera phone that’s been on the protein shakes, big time. Either way, you end up at the same end result. Obviously it’s not as hard as the JCB TOUGH PHONE, but then, the JCB TOUGH PHONE hasn’t got a camera at all, let alone a Cyber-Shot one.

So, if you’re a builder, buy a TOUGH PHONE. If you’re, like, an extreme ironer or a white water rafter, or you just tend to use your camera phone in the rain, then get the Sony Ericsson C702. Look, it’s great, you can use it fountains, like this guy, although try not to gurn like he does, or you’ll look like a tool…

What about the Samsung Solid M110?
Is it also resistant to shocks and dust?
seems quite a good phone anyway, too bat it isn’t 6MP, it would be the PERFECT phone

Well, the C702 is resistant to dust and water, but it seems, NOT to shocks. But hey, it’s a start.

As for the Samsung Solid, yep, great phone, it’s just a shame the camera’s not higher spec.

I’m all for a good photo but you would have to be a right cretin to get that wet in the name of photography

Shame about the non-shock-proofness. I’ve had a Nokia 5500 for a while that I run Viewranger OS maps on. I clip it to the handlebars on my Hardtail MTB and have done some rocky gnarly trails in rain & mud and it works a treat, no problems. The downsides are small screen & rubbish camera, so I thought this would sort me out :(
Any water/dust/shock proof symbian phones coming out from anyone else???

  • Sony Ericsson Mobile Games

This phone is really awesome and but i don’t think this is all in all now in the market, but will took one advantage of pioneer introduction. after this superb handset every body waiting for new samsung m110 which is same like it or may be more but this will definitely shock for sony ericsson c702….let see whats up for user’s

  • adam

how water proof actually is it?

  • TechnicalMarkus

Well, now, there’s the question… to be honest, we won’t really know until it’s released, but I would assume it’s water-RESISTANT, not waterproof.

If I had one, I wouldn’t fancy testing it in the bath, let’s put it that way!

I have this phone and have had it for a while. Its suprisingly more resitant to water than i thought it would be, as I am able to take pictures under the water in our swimming pool, how cool is that!!!! However, it fell out of my pocket just once at the train station and is now at sony ericsson in for repair as it will keep cutting out randomly, whether thats a water fault, a dropping fault or just a darn right annoying fault with the whole phone i dont know, but fingers crossed it works better once its been repaired.
