Bluetooth’s been with us for a good few years, now, letting people do things as diverse as having a safe phone call while driving, to sending each other silly, and often crude (usually crude, in my experience) audio files. And over the years, as we’ve gone from version 1, to version 2 and 2.1, it’s got faster and faster, making for better call quality when you’re tramming down the M1, or letting you get that stupid, and probably crude, mp3 faster.
However, according to Engadget Mobile, it’s all set to get faster still when Bluetooth 3.0 rocks up to the party.
And that’s because Bluetooth 3.0 will be able to use WiFi.
Essentially, what will happen is that the phone will connect via Bluetooth normally, to the other phone, or other device you’re hooking it up to, but then, to get a faster connection, it’ll set up an ad-hoc, on the fly WiFi link between the two devices, bunging the speed up exponentially. Since the Bluetooth connection will manage the WiFi itself, there’ll be no need to set up a mini-WiFi network, and the whole process will appear seamless to you, the end user. Well, you will notice when the WiFi kicks in, because your file transfer will suddenly go into warp speed.
There’s no word yet on what will be the first phone to feature Bluetooth 3.0, but as soon as it appears on a phone, we shall leap, leap into action to bring you the scoop!
