The BBC has revealed its plans to launch free mobile applications, starting with one for the Apple iPhone.

A BBC News app is planned for release in April so customers can access its journalistic content quicker.

And the news provider is also considering a mobile function for its BBC iPlayer site, which could be released later in 2010.

Erik Huggers, director of future media and technology at the organisation, said at the Mobile Word Congress (MWC) that the company is trying to create "greater public value" and allow users to enjoy their content more when they are out and about.

He added: "It’s been 12 years since the launch of BBC Online, but as media converges and technology accelerates, licence fee payers are increasingly using sophisticated handheld devices to access information."

This news comes after it was announced at the MWC that a Wholesale Applications Community has been set-up by 24 telecommunications operators in order to try to build apps which will be available to all mobile phone users.
