Apple ‘to replace Google with Bing’ on iPhones

Apple is considering striking a deal to replace Google with Microsoft’s Bing as the standard search engine for iPhones, Bloomberg reported yesterday (January 20th).

Despite the well-publicised animosity between the two computing giants over the years, executives are rumoured to have held discussions in the past couple of weeks.

A deal would suit both parties, as Apple would receive a higher share of the mobile advertising profits than it can currently command from Google.

At the same time, the iPhone platform would provide Microsoft with a valuable opportunity to gain some much-needed market share for its Bing offering.

"A deal between Apple and Microsoft may mean iPhone owners would automatically get Microsoft’s Bing as the main search engine, possibly requiring users to actively change phone settings if they want to search via Google," wrote Bloomberg’s Peter Burrows and Cliff Edwards.

Apple confirmed this week that its mobile application sales hit 2.5 million in 2009, accounting for 99.3 per cent of all sales in the sector.
