More than three billion apps have been purchased from Apple’s App Store by iPhone and iPod touch users, the technology firm has announced.
Despite only being launched 18 months ago, the online store now stocks thousands of titles across 20 distinct categories, including travel, news, sport, business and games.
And, far from being largely driven by demand from within the US, Apple has also revealed that consumers from 77 countries across the planet have so far taken advantage of the iPhone apps, helping the company to reach this landmark figure in double-quick time.
Welcoming the news, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said: "Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months – this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before."
"The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon."
At the same time, a new app enabling iPhone users to take credit card payments over a handset is set to be launched in Las Vegas later this month.
