The Apple iPhone’s existence has shown people they can do more than just text or call on a handset, according to a magazine.

Jonathan Morris, editor of What Mobile, said "many people simply won’t want a dumb phone ever again".

His comments come as figures show the shipment of smartphones increased by 30 per cent in the last quarter of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008.

The report by Strategy Analytics also revealed that Apple had outgrown its major rivals even though Nokia shipped a record number of smartphones.

Mr Morris added: "Many entry-level handsets are being made to give smartphone features to younger people on a budget."

He highlighted LG and Samsung as making a "real effort" to manufacture devices that are affordable with email options and apps compatibility.

But he warned that the industry should not start making only smartphones, because this could alienate people who do not require all the extra features now available.
