Another day, another PSP-phone rumour...Ah, urban legends. Those persistent little stories that just won’t die. You know, like the one about the family who get home to find their dog choking to death, only to find he’s choking on the fingers of the burglar who he prevented from breaking in. We have our own fair share in the world of mobile phones (cooking eggs by phone, anyone?), but there’s one story, which isn’t really an urban legend, but I’ve written the intro now, so go with me…

Yes, I’m talking about the PSP-Phone, the merging of Sony’s PSP technology with a mobile phone. There’ve been stories about it for aaaaaaaaaaaages, and yet, they’ve never come to fruition.

Well, according to a new story from Reuters, the PSP-phone might be edging closer to reality. We’ve all heard rumours before, but these ones sound a bit more concrete. The article reports that Sony are definitely looking to get a PSP-phone to the market, to take on the iPhone, which, thanks to its App Store, is regarded as one of the best mobile gaming machines around. And to be honest, it must be a fairly decent system, since Capcom and Square Enix are punting games out on it. However, having seen Gran Turismo running on the PSP, I’d say that if Sony get it right, it’d kick the iPhone’s bottom…

Of course, it all depends on whether the latest rumour’s true. The article goes on to state that Sony plan on setting up a project team to work on the PSP-phone, possibly as early as July. Needless to say, Sony have declined to comment on the issue, which could mean one of two things. It could mean ‘yes, alright, we’re making one, stop bugging us, we’re not telling you anything yet’, the equivalent of the US government saying ‘there is no installation at Groom Lake’, when there clearly is (although, to be fair, they now say ‘there’s no government installation at Groom Lake’, which is true, ‘cos it’s owned by Lockheed. Proving ground for concept aircraft, yes. Test-flying UFOs? Nope).

But the thing is… I’ve seen enough PSP-phone rumours to make me not get my hopes up just yet. I reckon it’s a case of believe it when you see it. And even if it never happens, let’s be honest, there’s always the glory of the Sony Ericsson Satio to look forward to. Now that phone’s gonna be fun…
