Mobile phone operator 3 has added its 10,000th 3G site and hopes to have around 13,000 by the end of the year.

The site, based in Shooters Hill, south-east London, has improved and increased mobile broadband coverage for consumers, according to the company.

Graham Baxter, chief technical officer at 3 UK, said the network is the biggest 3G network in the UK and highlighted the increased use of mobile broadband and production of smartphones as reasons to continue increasing its 3G sites.

He added: "Now we’re adding new coverage and capacity across the country to meet demand and bring the benefits of 3G to people who’ve never had access in their area before."

The move comes as 3 aims to join forces with T Mobile through the Mobile Broadband Network Limited, which would allow both mobile phone operators to have more 3G services available to customers, but with fewer masts.

The increase in mobile broadband coverage arrives after 3 launched Spotify, a music streaming service, for the Symbian operating system available via Planet3 in December.
