Earlier in the year, I did a blog post about how (according to reports at the time) it wouldn’t be long until we saw phones that had both a normal LCD screen and an E-Ink screen, both within one bodyshell. Yeah, well, it’s sort of happened, now, ‘cos the YotaPhone has been unveiled in Russia…
I’m not going to beat about the bush, here; I love that idea concept! That’s not all I love, though, ‘cos I also love the fact that the rest of the specs look to be equally up to par…
I do find it heartening that, in spite of the fact they could have with a smaller or lower resolution LCD screen, while letting the E-Ink screen stand out as the phone’s only gimmick (‘cos it is, admittedly, one hell of a gimmick), they instead chose to go with a 4.3 inch 720p screen. It’s also got a dual-core Snapdragon processor, clocked to 1.5GHz, so hot damn, it’s pretty much the same spec as the HTC 8X (albeit running on Android instead of Windows Phone).
Impressive. Most impressive.
There was one other bit I loved in that little video, and it was when he captured the screen image of Google Maps, and punted it to the E-Ink screen on the back. I’d already thought of the idea of reading ebooks on the second screen, but I have to admit that I hadn’t thought of that. It ain’t just maps, either. Imagine if you were looking at recipes online (like The Hairy Biker recipes on t’BBC website, for example); you could capture the image of the site, stick it on the back of the phone, and have your phone there as a cookbook. And since it’d be on the E-Ink screen, instead of the LCD screen, neither of the screens would be drawing any power.
That is win.
Now, of course, Yota is a manufacturer that’s completely unknown in the UK (hell, I hadn’t heard about them till today), but imagine how cool it’d be if someone like HTC or Samsung started making phones like this.
So, basically, I’m hoping this concept has legs, ‘cos blimey, I’d love to see it become more commonplace in the market…
