Yet more Sony Ericsson X2 Vulcan images appear onlineYet another cluster of photos of the upcoming Sony Ericsson X2 has popped up online, according to The Boy Genius Report, but this time, the new phone’s doing its thang alongside its older sibling; y’know, my phone, the Sony Ericsson X1.

On the one hand, I’m thinking “woohoo, new phone pics”, but on the other, as much as I hate to admit this, I’m also starting to think “damn, it doesn’t look as good as the X1″…

However, that’s not the most disappointing thing. What’s made me sad today, is the fact that you can clearly see, in these pictures, that the Sony Ericsson X1 ain’t got a 3.5 inch screen. Nope, what it’s actually got is a 3.2 inch screen, which is a real shame. The other rumour, about it being a capacitive screen, have been debunked too, because the phone comes with a stylus, and you can’t use a stylus on a capacitive screen. Although, of course, it may not be such a big problem, since the Sony Ericsson Satio has got a non-capacitive screen, too, and I have no particular qualms with that.

Ok, that’s the downside. On the upside, though, the specs are still better than my current X1. It’s definitely running an 8MP camera, which is quite considerably better than the 3MP I’ve got now. The keyboard is also, by all accounts, much nicer then the one in the X1. And I already like the one in the X1, so the new one may well make my head blow up in joy.

Of course, there’s also the fact that the Sony Ericsson X2 is running on WinMo 6.5, and can be upgraded to WinMo 7 when Microsoft gets round to releasing it. That’s a big plus.

Finally, there’s the panels interface, and here’s where I’m intrigued, because the panels button on the front of the X2 is very different to the one on the X1, and has an icon that suggests some kind of 3D scrolling panel carousel thingie. If it’s a proper 3D front end, that would suggest a much more powerful processor. I’m not going to get my hopes up for a Snapdragon or a Tegra chip just yet, but that’s what I’d like to see the X2 running on.

I’m really hoping it’s got one of those two chips in it, otherwise it may have trouble competing against the likes of the Toshiba TG01, ‘cos I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a big screen, and a fast processor. Since the screen is only 3.2 inches, I really hope they don’t drop the ball on the processor.

Question is, will I still get one? Well, the news about the smaller than expected screen has made it a bit less attractive, but overall, yeah, I’ll still be getting one.

Unless, of course, they announce something so monumentally mind-blowing between now and then that it actually makes bits of my brain catch fire…
