Adverts for mobile phones generally aren’t the most exciting things in the world, are they? Lots of lingering glances at the phone itself, a few gorgeous women, and a bloke who’s buffed up to the eyeballs.
Unless you’re Sony Ericsson, apparently…
It seems they’ve gone down the viral route to promote the upcoming Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia, according to Pocket Lint. In other words, we’ve got an advert for a mobile phone that has about three shots (and quick ones, at that) of the actual phone itself. If not for the socking great Sony Ericsson logo at the end, you’d never even know it is a Sony Ericsson advert.
What we’ve got is a trailer for an upcoming thriller, ‘Johnny X’, with a bloke who looks like he’s living on the edge, and hanging onto his nerves by his teeth (which he might be, since there’s a ‘WANTED’ poster for him halfway through. Gasp! What could he be wanted for?). Oh, and it has car chases. And a bloke doing a parkour-free-running-style-jump-thing over a rope barrier.
So, like, it’s the Bourne Identity of mobile phone advertising, then?
However, now we get onto the juicy bits, because there are some hidden bits amongst the video, and the associated site. First up, you see the letters SE, looking they’re monogrammed onto something… Is this a clue to who he is, as well as being the abbreviation of Sony Ericsson?
More intriguing, though, there are two separate phone numbers, hidden in plain sight, in the video. I’m seriously beginning to wonder what those numbers are. I’m willing to bet they’re tied in with the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia, and its promo campaign, because, let’s face it, you’re not going to stick your nan’s phone number in a video the whole world can see.
However, one looks to be from Thailand, and one is a digit longer than the right number format for the USA. So I’m not ringing them. Ooh, they’re damnably intriguing, though. The numbers, as you can see in the video, and on the Sony Ericsson micro site, Whoisjohnny-x.com, are +66807590136 and +15411483277. I’ve signed up for Sony Ericsson alerts on Johnny X, but until they come through, we don’t really know what the next episode will be, whether they will make more than one, or what. We don’t know a great deal, at this point, other than that it’s promoting mobile phones, specifically the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia.
So, this is where I throw it open to you guys. If you can spot the significance of these numbers, or know if they belong to Sony Ericsson (which I strongly suspect), then pipe up and tell us. Like I say, though, they’re not UK numbers, so big bills may well ensue if you ring them from the UK.
Let’s work out just who Johnny X is (other than a fake character made up to sell a mobile phone, with a trailer that’s quite clearly nicked off Casino Royale, Memento and The Bourne Trilogy, that is…)
And while we’re working it out, check out our coming coon page, to sign up for release news about the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia.

No luck there for me…
