Tegra 4 processor leaked online, and ye gods, it looks powerful!

I really don’t need to say this again, but I’m going to say it anyway; I like my phones big and powerful. I know it’s possibly a teeny bit sad that I get excited over things like the screen size of the Samsung Galaxy Note II, or the clock speed of the Tegra 3 processor in the LG Optimus 4X HD, but there ye go. So yeah, I like power.

Anyway, now I’ve brought up the topic of Nvidia processors, some details of the next Tegra chipset have leaked online.

Yes, details have popped up on ChipHell (Google-translated link), and the new Tegra 4, codenamed ‘Wayne’, sounds like an ungodly powerful beast of a thing…

However, it also sounds like it’ll be as power-efficient as the Tegra 3 is, when ye’re not using it. You may remember that I did a battery test on my HTC One X, and I found that, thanks to the 5th low power core in the processor, the battery life was shockingly long, for a modern smartphone (again, when you’re not using it; cane the phone and it’ll eat your battery, as you’d expect). Well, the Tegra 4 shares the same 4+1 core design, but it uses a 28nm manufacturing process, so it’ll be even more power-efficient than the current-gen Tegra 3.

That’s not the exciting bit, though…

No, the really exciting bit is the graphics processor, ‘cos the Tegra 4 uses a GeForce graphics chip with 72 cores. Seventy-two. Nvidia reckons that the graphical performance will be 6 times faster than the Tegra 3, and that just blows my mind, man! Oh, and also, it’ll support screen resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 pixels, so expect to see some super high definition phones and tablets when this bad boy hits the market.

Basically, it’s going to be a beast, and I cannot wait to see it in action…

About TechnicalMarkus

It's a little known fact Technical Markus has now beaten both his Transformers addiction AND his Mass Effect addiction, by replacing both with an equally obsessive addiction to XCOM: Enemy Unknown and buying Humble Bundles for his Android phone. At the moment, he's pondering the actual usefulness of smartwatches and smart glasses, even if the nerd in him is shouting for joy at how sci-fi they are. He spends his spare time being whinged at to figure out what's wrong with other people's mobile phones, and drinking unimaginable quantities of tea. With milk. And three sweeteners, thanks for asking. Oh, and he's got an HTC One X, but he reckons his next phone might be a Sony, the turncoat...
