I really don’t need to say this again, but I’m going to say it anyway; I like my phones big and powerful. I know it’s possibly a teeny bit sad that I get excited over things like the screen size of the Samsung Galaxy Note II, or the clock speed of the Tegra 3 processor in the LG Optimus 4X HD, but there ye go. So yeah, I like power.
Anyway, now I’ve brought up the topic of Nvidia processors, some details of the next Tegra chipset have leaked online.
Yes, details have popped up on ChipHell (Google-translated link), and the new Tegra 4, codenamed ‘Wayne’, sounds like an ungodly powerful beast of a thing…
However, it also sounds like it’ll be as power-efficient as the Tegra 3 is, when ye’re not using it. You may remember that I did a battery test on my HTC One X, and I found that, thanks to the 5th low power core in the processor, the battery life was shockingly long, for a modern smartphone (again, when you’re not using it; cane the phone and it’ll eat your battery, as you’d expect). Well, the Tegra 4 shares the same 4+1 core design, but it uses a 28nm manufacturing process, so it’ll be even more power-efficient than the current-gen Tegra 3.
That’s not the exciting bit, though…
No, the really exciting bit is the graphics processor, ‘cos the Tegra 4 uses a GeForce graphics chip with 72 cores. Seventy-two. Nvidia reckons that the graphical performance will be 6 times faster than the Tegra 3, and that just blows my mind, man! Oh, and also, it’ll support screen resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 pixels, so expect to see some super high definition phones and tablets when this bad boy hits the market.
Basically, it’s going to be a beast, and I cannot wait to see it in action…
