Sony Ericsson named best mobile phone manufacturerWell, the prestigious What Mobile Awards have been and gone again, and we now know who the winners are! Just who makes the best mobile phones, what is the best music phone, what is the best camera phone? Well, now we know! And what’s more, since the What Mobile Awards are based on what you, the public, say, that means each of these winners is a genuine winner with the people who matter: you guys.

And that made me sound like a suck-up, sorry folks.

However, there were only two companies who won more than one award. Apple scooped standalone best mp3 player (iPod Touch) and phone of the year (iPhone 3G). But the nice surprise (for me, anyway) was that the other company who scooped multiple awards wasn’t, as you’d expect, Nokia.

It was Sony Ericsson.

With me being a Sony junkie, that’s rather a good thing.

So, Sony Ericsson snagged themselves the ‘best manufacturer’ award, but the biggest twist was that the Sony Ericsson W890i, the tiny but brilliant Walkman mobile phone, was named the best music phone of 2008, much to the chagrin of fans of the iPhone, which it trounced. There now follows a special note to the member of our web team who has an iPhone 3G:

If you’re reading this, Dan, the phrase is, I believe, “Hahahaha, you lose!”

But, all in all, then, it just proves that despite the fact UIQ’s being binned, and despite the fact Sony Ericsson have developed something of a reputation for making ‘copy/paste’ mobile phones (you know, two virtually identical mobile phones, but with slightly different specs, and paint jobs, and names, something Sony Ericsson themselves freely admit to), people still love ‘em. With mobile phones like the Sony Ericsson X1 to cement that reputation, long may it continue, I say!
