Blimey, today’s third post and it’s another product launch. We’ve already had news of Samsung and HTC launching new phones, and now it’s Sony Ericsson’s turn, although according to the Sony Ericsson press release, it’s something a bit different to the Satio, Aino and Yari announcement at the end of May.
Yep, tomorrow marks the unveiling of the first commercial phones to fall under the heading of GreenHeart. Sony Ericsson is going to launch its first eco-phones.
I’m happy about that for two reasons: 1/ I get to my ongoing baby-panda-phone joke again; and 2/ the GreenHeart concept isn’t just some gimmicky thing, whereby they’re sticking a solar charger on the back of a phone (Samsung Blue Earth, I’m looking at you).
No, GreenHeart is a vast initiative on Sony Ericsson’s part, as its purpose has always been to not focus on gimmicky eco-concepts, but bring about real changes in their whole product range. The first fruits of GreenHeart’s labours are going to be unveiled tomorrow.
So, what can we expect?
Well, first of all, I wouldn’t expect anything near the power of the Sony Ericsson Satio. The realist in me is expecting mid-to-low-end phones. However, if I wanted to make a splash, I’d make the world’s first completely eco-friendly, top-end super-smartphone. That’d get them talked about no end!
Still, it’s the first time I’ve ever actually been interested in eco-phones, and their ‘environmental warranty’ program (where people can recycle their phones through dedicated Sony Ericsson centres) is bound to attract a lot of attention, since, according to our news section, recycling mobile phones is having a massive surge in popularity.
And no, before anyone asks, I have never recycled a phone, for a reason you might not expect (unless you know me quite well): I’ve still got most of my old phones, and the ones I haven’t are still in use as I sold ‘em. From where I’m sitting right now, for instance, I can put my hands on a Motorola L7, my current X1, a Sony Ericsson W950, an Ericsson T28s (remember them?), a Samsung T100 and a Sagem MyX-2…
Compulsive hoarding? Me?
