Ooh, it’s that time again. The time when Sonim announces a new phone, and I go gaga over it, because it’ll be tough enough to, if thrown with enough force, destroy Mount Everest. Honestly, if you lobbed a Sonim phone at that Himalayan peak, you wouldn’t need climbing to tackle it in future, just a pair of hiking boots to saunter over the pile of pebbles it would become.
In other words, Sonim make phones that can be rightly considered the David Prowse of the phone world. Immensely strong, look evil (in a cool way) in black, and I love ‘em to bits.
And apparently, according to the TFTS blog, there’s a new one on the way, and this time, it actually includes some pretty cool features (other than the obvious one, which is being ‘solid enough to brain a whale’). Y’see, the filing for the new Sonim XP2 Spirit explicitly states that the phone now has 3G. Which means decent data speeds, and since the phone should have Opera Mini (since the previous Sonim XP3 did, according to the manufacturer’s own press release), that’ll mean internet browsing. Very possibly whilst halfway up a mountain.
Oh, and unless my eyes are very much deceiving me, the XP2 Spirit’s also got a 3MP camera. So while you’re halfway up a mountain, looking at the internet, you’ll also be able to take decent photos with your phone.
Of course, the key thing with Sonim phones will always be how relentlessly, mentally hardcase they are. I’ve seen ‘em hit with hammers. I’ve seen ‘em buried in concrete (then chiselled out again). I’ve seen ‘em attached to fireworks and blown up.
And none of that killed them! They always worked perfectly!
In fact, I seem to remember that the only time I’ve ever seen a Sonim phone killed was when it was shot in a Youtube video, at point blank range, by a Glock 17. So, it seems that literally, the only thing that can kill a Sonim is being shot in the face by a high power handgun.
That’s a quality I like to see in my phones, and it’s undoubtedly going to be carried over to the Sonim XP2, although this time, it’ll be in a sort of octagonal shape, making it look even more futuristicky.
In other words, I can’t wait to have a muck about with one.
