I’ve been a fan of Sonim phones ever since the JCB Tough Phone was released. Sure, their phones aren’t technical or clever, but there’s something to be said for a phone you can brain a whale with. Having personally hit myself in the head with a JCB phone, I can attest to the fact it’s built like a brick… well, you know the rest.
Like I said, though, they’ve never been very exciting in terms of other features. You can hammer nails in with them, but they’re never been top-end, feature-packed phones.
According to IntoMobile, however, they’ve taken a step towards changing that with the launch of the Sonim XP2 Spirit, because it’s the first Sonim phone to have a 3G antenna. I’ve spoken about it in an earlier blog post, but now it’s actually, properly been announced, we can get a clear look at it in all its octagonal glory. Apparently, that vaguely octagonal shape is no accident, either, and it’s not just shaped like that for aesthetics. No, apparently, that shape makes the phone particularly resistant to drops, I’m guessing, because it means there are no right-angle corners, which lead to structural weak points on the front of the phone. Or I may have made that up, but hey, at least it sounded plausible.
Now for the techy stuff. It’s got a media player (woohoo, that’s a first), a 3MP camera (which will work, lest we forget, underwater), and a 3G antenna. So it’ll actually get a decent internet connection, and since I hoping that one of the Java apps it’ll be loaded with is Opera Mini, that’ll mean full internet access, even while you’re underwater (well, alright, just imagine you got a signal underwater, for the image to work properly in your head). Or in the bath.
Although what websites you might be browsing while in the bath is probably best left to the imagination, but not my imagination, since it’s coming up with some really baaaaaaaad mental images. But anyway, back to the point, it’s still got a long way to go before it’s as powerful as something like the HTC HD2, but it’s a step in the right direction, and hey, you can’t use your HD2 in the bath.
Well, you probably could, but only the once…
