Sleep-texting – do you use your mobile phone in your sleep?

sending text from mobile phones while asleepEvery so often, a story pops up about mobile phones that just makes me go, “Yeeeeeeeeeeah, I have to blog that.” Usually, it’s something stupidly hilarious, or something that could be a massively big deal in the mobile world. Every once in a while, though, it’s something that’s both, just like a story from TheStar.com. Apparently, mobile phones aren’t just everywhere in our waking lives, but they’re even taking us over while we sleep.

Well, that is, if you believe the claims of people who say that they have found they actually send text messages, from their mobile phones, while they’re asleep.

Now, at first, this does indeed look like it’s come out of one of the loony papers, and should share the page with stories about buses on the moon, and aliens abducting people to play ‘hide the implant’. Surely these stories of people using mobile phones in their sleep are the same, urban legends or made up to make fun out of (or make money from) gullible people?

Those are the things you’re all expecting me to say. I know you’re all thinking I’m going to say that, I can practically smell it.

Well, you’re wrong.

Because, believe it or not, there is a vast amount of evidence that suggests it is actually possible and plausible, and let’s face it, sleep disorders are a lot more plausible than ‘Redneck gets a probin’ from aliens’ stories. After all, sleepwalking is a recognised phenomenon, and you might not realise that sleepwalking can frequently involve acts much more complicated than using mobile phones. Cleaning the house is a common one, or sleep eating, or binge drinking in your sleep. It’s a recognised phenomenon, and has even been used as a defence in the case of Kenneth Parks, where he drove to and killed his in-laws, all whilst asleep, and having no conscious memory of it.

When you look at it like that, sending a message from your mobile phone, mimicking your dream, saying, “Wofbah, I’m running the sheepy bicycle shining on my knees,” is not such an unlikely thing.

So, in conclusion, yes I think it’s entirely plausible that people can grab their mobile phones, send a text, then roll over and go back to whatever dream they were in, and do all that without waking up.

It’s just a mercy they don’t wake up with their Apple iPhone 3G rammed up their nose, I suppose. Still, it’d stop the aliens playing ‘hide the implant’ up there…

Have you ever sent a text message in your sleep? Do you think it’s all a load of rubbish, or are you a regular sleep-texter? Leave us a message and have your say!

I’ve never….ever! met anyone that’s texted someone while being asleep…maybe phoned the first person in our contact lists….but that’s about it.

    Hi,

I woke up this morning, shocked and totally confused to find that I had sent a text message to my ex-boyfriend in the middle of the night!

I had been speaking to him during that evening and shortly after, fell asleep. I woke up this morning to find that I had texted him in the early hours of the morning saying “Hi Steven. Hope youre all ok. When will you be in wsm apain?x (Which should have read “again” and WSM is my home town!)

I felt totally embarrased and had no recollection of texting him the message and it didnt make sense anyway as I had only spoken to him a couple of hours before, so yes, I knew how he was and “hope youre all ok”…well, there is only him!

Embarrased, I texted him to apologise, maybe a ghost (haha) or just sleep texting (if that is possible?!)…I just couldnt understand it, other than my daughter sleepwalking, which she tends to do on occasions and maybe she did it?…who knows, but very strange and quite worrying!!

    Thanks

    Hello there.
Well it happened today. I didn’t sleep all night because I had some work to finish and in the morning came all the other worries so I stayed awake until 1 p.m. I set my phone to wake me up at 2:30 and, as it often happens, i woke up at 5:30. Probably kept snoozing for 20 minutes or so (as usually). Which I tought was ok, altough I was almost late for a meeting, because I needed some. I eventually sent a message to someone saying that I was going to be late and while doing that, I noticed the last message sent. The nokia phones have this setting, the text remains in the editor after you send the message. I didn’t think much about it. Erased it, then stopped. ‘What was that?’ I tought. Then looked up the sent messages and found I had sent a message to a friend at 2:56 with the content “sample:director, friend etc” . It makes no sense at all. I checked out the set wake up time. It’s 2:50. Not 2:30. So I must’ve reset it or something. But the text make no sense at all.
Later on, after the meeting I told this to someone and he said he’d read about his phenomena somwhere. So I googled it and got here and on many other websites. It seems we’re really victims of modern time.
    Well, thanks for reading this.
    Good luck with your sleep..

    Hi,
I believe this whole thing. I normally wake up every morning, look at my phone, and realize that i had texted someone while i was sleeping. i never remeber dong it, but the messages all make sense. it’s really wierd for me becauae i’ve never been known to sleep walk or anything. Now experiencing this, it’s just kind of crazy.

    Hi All,
It sounds different and unnatural, text messaging someone while asleep. Anyway I personally don’t experienced yet.

  • kelseyy

I have text people in my sleep twice,
once was last night, i text my best friend in my sleep saying ,
    ‘look, just take us!!’
its really weird cause her name starts with s so i would of had to scrolled all the way down,
i have NO memory of it, appart from the fact it is in my sent messages.
i only knew about it when she text me today saying ,’what was that message about last night?’
i text her at twenty to one when i was sound asleep,
    so yes, this is possible.

Just this morning I was woken up out of a dream when my fiance Joel called. He asked me what ‘the msg ment’. I must have been dreaming about him, and I had text him “have you showered yet?” It didn’t make any sense to me and I was still half asleep when he called. To make things worse, now he thinks that I am cheating on him and has broken up with me. I don’t know what to do. I feel so hopeless and angry at myself because I feel like I havn’t done anytihing wrong. I don’t blame him though it sounds really far fetched. I wish there was more awareness about this so he wouldn’t think i’m lying!! I have a 8 week old child to him and I am completely in love with him. Im so upset!!

  • TechnicalMarkus

Honestly, Rebecca, I don’t know what to suggest. Although if you have him read the info out there on the net about sleep-texting (of which, there IS some), then he should realise you’re not making it up. I know a few people who’ve told me they’ve done it, and received a ‘sleep-text’ myself off a friend, so I firmly believe it does happen.

Chin up, you’ll get it sorted.

  • Brittany

I have experienced this before too.

I fell asleep watching a show about a band being In a bubble.

I woke up with a msg saying, “what???”

I went to my sent msgs and Apparently I sent a msg saying, “People are in a bubble.” Well I have no memory of sending it at all. I do remember dreaming about being in a bubble that night though. It was very strange.

I have been doing this for the past 3 years. I am not sure why or how, but my texts are very poetic and I have found out that they usually occur after I don’t sleep well for a few days. I am a diagnoised insomanic and I usually send a text while sleeping about every other month. I have started to save them and my favorite one is “Just when you think its ok, its funny how it all falls apart. Sneaky eyes and a wild heart can be destructive in a land with no love. Where are you from?” Sent to my ex-girlfriend. Pretty weird

  • Allison

Last night I went to bed at 10:30. This morning when I woke up my boyfriend texted me asking me “what was with that text last night” I told him I didn’t text him but he told me to check my phone. Sure enough at 11:45 I texted him saying “OMG what are they doing”. I have texted him in my sleep before but it was always gibberish, this time the text was legit. I think it’s weird and it’s kind of scary. I’m guessing I was probably just dreaming about something weird and that’s why I made that comment, but it still kind of freaky. I have problems with sleeping and I can never stay asleep the whole night. I wake up 4-5 times during one night so I think that might have something to do with it.

This Morning my girlfriend asked me if I meant to text her at 3.30am this morning? I replied that I hadn’t texted her at all, she insisted i had and showed me the message which said it was from me and delivered at 3.30am. The message said ” Hey Baby, half Sun for questioning! X ” Not a private joke or anyhting, it really makes no sense, i have no history of sleepwalking or anything, was sober when going to sleep at 1.30am and to my knowledge slept well until 8.00am. Weird that i have no memory of it and it however meaningless was spelt correctly and appeared to be a sensical message!!!! Any thoughts???????

hi. this happened to me last night.. i was awoken this morning by a call from my dad about our plans for the weekend and once i hung up i looked at the screen of my phone and i was in new message saying “awesomeneka” (which isn’t a real word lol) to my friend matt. which starts with m obviously so i would have had to scroll all the way down, which isn’t easy on a touch screen phone even when conscious. then i saw i had three new messages from matt. the first was “are you awake” sent at 12:45, the second was “48 days till soundwave” sent at 12:38 and the third was “whats wrong?” sent at 1:20. i checked my sent messages and i had text back to “are you awake” saying “yup :( ” i dont know why i would put a saddy face on it, coz i wasn’t sad last night and i dont remember texting it cox i went to sleep about 12. i think i had started writing awesome(neka) in response to “48 days till soundwave” but i dont remember it. it was scary, i woke up and told mum and my stepdad but i dont think they beleived me. my stepdad then went on to say “actually, i woke up about 2 this morning and you were sitting on the computer.” i didn’t beleive him. (and i checked the computers history haha) i have slept walked once in my life. i woke up in the middle of the night and i was standing in my brothers room and i got scared and started feeling around for the light and i felt his face and nearly woke him up then i turned on the light and got even more scared then left the room and tried to get back to my room (which was right across the hallway) and it took ages to get back and i was nearly crying! well thats my story lol thanks for listenin :)

This morning I got to work, went to text my friend and saw that there was a text to her at 5.30am from me sayin “Smeegle n pics done..x” now I have no memmory of this whats so ever, I had watched lord of the rings the night before which of course has Smeegle in but “smeegle n pics done..x”?? i’ve know idea what this means lol

I had to text my friend an apoligise for texting her so early an explain i’ve no idea what I was on about or that I was awake.

So I did a little searching and have found i’m not alone in this.

Bear in mind I do alot of texting 2500 – 3000 texts a month, my friends already take the mick saying i’m a text addictedto texting ..now I feel they may be right lol

    Cheers..

this happened to my girlfriend twice last night.. first at one am telling me she was puking and she had to rest and that she loved me.. then i woke up to a text at five am saying “I’m sorry this happened but there is nothing i can do about it. I’m at the medical center here and i might be here for awhile :/ I love you.” that scared me beyond belief and even more when i found out she was just texting me in her sleep about her dream.. she has also talked to me on the phone in her sleep i wish this would stop.. does anyone know why or how exactly this happens?

Last night, I was texting a friend, and thougt I had ended the conversation by saying “I’m falling asleep. Ttyl. Night”. When I woke up thismorning, I foundout that I had only dreamed I sent that text, when, in reality, I had continued having an extremely weird conversation with him. I asked him if he thought it was weird, and he said he thought I was just joking and played along. The strangest part in all of this is that he thought I was awake because I had used perfect grammar, spelling, and punctuation, which is something I am usually very aware of.

  • TechnicalMarkus

    @ No. 5:
Eek, that’s scary. It’s essentially the same as sleepwalking, from what I can gather, so might be worth her seeing a doctor if it’s a common occurence? If it is a problem, she’d most likely be referred to a sleep specialist.

    @Sable:
That is impressive, especially since I rarely do that when I’m awake. But aye, sleep disturbances like this are proof positive that the human mind is a very strange thing indeed.

  • margaret

sh*t does happen! happened to me last night, or this morning, but i had a dream i was texting some one and woke up checked my phone, turned out i was actually texting but not the person in my dream so it was a pretty awkward explanation in the morning to the guy i actually texted!

  • ellie

    this is so freaky!
i didn’t know sleep texting was a thing until i googled why my friend was texting me while asleep!

she texted me tonight and asked me what i was doing, so i said ‘just on laptop you?’ then she replied ‘stomping my feet’
then she started saying she was screaming and said dead bodies, i’m really scared.

is there anyway i can help her? :/

My gf sleep-texts me all the time. This is a very real sleep disorder. At first she would send me messages that were words spelled correctly, but didn’t make much sense put together and had no spacing between words and minimal punctuation such as ”willyoubemyknightinshiningarmor.butwaityouwouldnt.spidersfreakmeout.eightleggedfreaks.justlikepenguins.theyrelikelittlemenintuxedos” and these messages usually run 3-4 pages long. She has been doing this for over a year now and it really isn’t a problem b/c they’re kinda funny, but she is slightly worried she will text the wrong person one night. Is there any way to remedy this problem? Aside from locking the phone in another room?

  • Kay

So glad to get info on this cause you know your friends dont beleive you. They think you just dont want to own up to your messages. I have taken a certain number off my phone because it has only happen three times but twice to one person. The text just ramble and really dont even sound like anything I would say or even make sense. But so glad to hear this info….at least I dont think Iam off the wall..altough they may.

On November 18 I went to see the midnight showing of harry potter and the deathly hollows, ( which would be nov 19th 12:01am ) I fell asleep around 3am that night and woke up at 9 to go to school. Later on that day I looked through my texts msg’s and found a really odd one that had been sent at 6:45am. It read “Lol, I can get fake pics of harry potter.” I did not send that msg while I wake…

this morning i got a text at 3:48, it was my boyfriend of two years. he sent me a text saying i lover you, i woke up and responded telling him i loved him too. then he starting screaming at me (in text) that i was cheating on him and that he wanted to break up. i couldn’t sleep after than and stayed up all night until my alarm went off for school. he then called me at 6:30 and told me he didn’t recall texting me at all other than the i love you part. i didn’t know what to believe because its happened before, but this time i was totally freaked out and so mixed up. it was so confusing..he kept saying that something comes over him like he gets possessed or something. so i googled “texting in your sleep” and i guess its possible….
