Samsung Omnia HD loses cool name to become Samsung i8910Every now and again, as much as I love mobile phones, one of the big manufacturers will do something that really winds me up. And thanks to Mobile Crunch, we have a story today about Samsung doing just that. Specifically, it’s a story about the Samsung Omnia HD.

Or should I say it was a story about the Samsung Omnia HD, since it’s now not going to be called the Omnia HD.

It seems that Samsung have decided to drop the Omnia HD nametag, and go simply with its model number, making it, now, the Samsung i8910. Which sounds nowhere near as cool, and doesn’t give any hint at all to the HD video recording that’s bound to be the phone’s big selling point.

As for Samsung’s reasoning behind the name change, they’re quoted as saying, “To avoid confusion between the original Omnia, which is Windows Mobile, and OmniaHD, which is Symbian, Samsung is deferring to the model number.”

Er, I think we could’ve told the difference, but nevertheless, it seems the choice has been made, folks. RIP Samsung Omnia HD, long live the Samsung i8910 HD.

Even if it doesn’t sound as cool.

[EDIT: Samsung have issued an official clarification around this story, and it seems that some countries WILL still get the phone labelled as the Omnia HD. It's only in a few markets where they've dropped the Omnia bit and called it the i8910. Er, but they haven't said which countries yet...]

[EDIT #2: Now it's officially gone on sale, I can confirm it IS, indeed, called the Samsung i8910 HD...]

Which name do you prefer? Leave us a comment and have your say!

Omfg spend your time on something else, than be conserned about a name of a cellphone.

Not my real mail adress so don’t bother replying

Well, to be fair, dude, it’s kinda my JOB to care about things like this. Besides, Omnia is still a cooler name…

And nah, wouldn’t want to reply to your real email address anyway, I always reply on the blog itself, in public. If I was going to mock you (which I’m not, because any comment is a good comment, as far as I’m concerned), I’d do it in public for all the world to see and heckle along with.

Like Mystery Science Theater 3000, only in text form, and not as funny.

Well, i do think Omnia HD is cooler than i8910. But i8910 is more like a model. However, young peope like to be cool.
