Whenever I talk about new phones on the pages of this ‘ere blog, there’s a couple of features I always talk about (or mention, at least), without fail. One of them’s the processor, ‘cos I love poowweeer, but the other one is the camera. Maybe it’s because customers like to know these things, or maybe it’s just because I like including numbers in my posts (like 1,199GHz or 9,000MP), those are the two things you can almost guarantee I’ll mention.
In the case of the newly announced Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, though, there’s a new number to mention, and it’s the number 10. Why? ‘Cos the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is a camera phone with 10x optical zoom. That’s a rarity, that, so let’s take a closer look…
The first point to make is that it’s not actually a Samsung Galaxy S4 with a massive camera glued to it; no, what it is, right, is the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, with a massive camera glued to it. In terms of the phone side of things, it’s got a 4.3 inch qHD screen, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 8GB of internal storage (plus a microSD slot). Oh, and it comes with Android 4.2.2 preinstalled, so the software’s nicely update too.
None of that is that important, though, because it’s what Samsung has stuck on the back that really matters.
Y’see, this beastie’s got a 16MP camera, but even that isn’t the exciting bit. The exciting bit is the honking great lens on the back, which has got 10x optical zoom, a ‘Zoom Ring’ and a proper xenon flash, just like a proper standalone point-and-shoot camera! It’s basically, then a fusion betwixt proper camera and Android phone, and it’s being described as “truly the best of both worlds, without compromise.”
Is Samsung catering to a market that doesn’t exist?
Time will tell…
