Well, there’s a disappointing bit of news, even if it’s something that is, overall, a good thing. Yes, according to IntoMobile, the biggest mobile event of the year, the Mobile World Congress, is happening this month, but it turns out that the Samsung Galaxy S III won’t be there. Nope, it turns out that Samsung will actually be unveiling it at a separate event, some time in the first half of the year.
While that’s undoubtedly disappointing news for people who’re looking forward to seeing the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S II, it’s actually probably the smartest move Samsung could make, and there’s a very simple reason why.
That reason is the iPhone 5…
Y’see, while we don’t know it’ll be called the iPhone 5, we all know that the follow-up to the iPhone 4S will be unveiled this year, at its own separate event, ‘cos Apple never unveil gear at the Mobile World Congress either. And Samsung want to steal Apple’s thunder, which is fine by me. So, naturally, they want to schedule their own launch event, for their brand new flagship phone, to be as close to Apple’s unveiling as it can be.
Simple logic, that.
Also, they’ve said in a press release that they want to minimise the amount of time between the unveiling and the phone going on sale, which is a brilliant motive, ‘cos if there’s one thing that annoys me (in this context, anyway… there’s thousands of things that annoy me in general terms, as you all know), it’s phone manufacturers announcing something, and then bringing it out for half a year.
Sony Ericsson, I’m looking at you…
So, yeah. No Galaxy S III at the Mobile World Congress, but it’s for a good reason. And anyway, it’s not like the phone won’t happen. We all just need to be patient…
