Now then, here’s an intriguing bit of news. For the past 14-ish years, Nokia has been the undisputed king of the smartphone world, right, racking up more sales than any other manufacturer, even if they’re not the most profitable company out there. In any discussion about ‘The Big Five’, that coveted top spot was always taken up by Nokia.
Now, though, it looks like they might be about to lose that top spot, according to Asymco. Yes, it looks like they might be about to get overtaken by their South Korean rivals; Samsung are about to take the Number 1 spot! Sure, that’s based on estimates, as Samsung haven’t published their sales figures yet, but a lot of people think it’s been a long time coming…
Basically, Nokia shipped 83 million phones in the first quarter of 2012, which, to be fair, is not something to be sniffed at. However, the lowest estimates are suggesting that Samsung shipped 85 million phones in the same period, and if that’s accurate, it means that they’ve snagged that top spot. Obviously we need to wait until they release their own figures to concretely confirm it, but the writing seems to be on the wall.
Samsung are now the biggest phone manufacturer in the world.
So, how did they manage to pull that off? Well, the mobile world is all about smartphones, these days, and basically, Samsung have been able to dominate that market (with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S II, arguably the most popular Android phone ever), while Nokia, in a very definite way, haven’t. Meanwhile, Nokia have, after signing up to use Windows Phone, only just released the Nokia Lumia 900.
Smartphones, that’s the key. Samsung have done some proper belters, and Nokia just haven’t.
Thus, ’tis only fair that Samsung wins…
