The world is in the grip of Windows Mobile 6.5 fever, right now (alright, maybe that’s a bit strong… Windows Mobile 6.5 is out now, and several people are excited, or have, at the very least, noticed). And WinMo 6.5 does indeed rock, but let us not forget that it’s merely a stopgap solution, a bit of a re-jig of their current phone OS, to make it more finger-friendly.
No, the real next-gen Microsoft phone OS is Windows Mobile 7, which is due out next year, and some new photos have appeared on PocketNow, that give us a better idea of what their next OS will be like.
I reckon I can sum it up in two words: big and shiny. The ‘big‘ part is what Microsoft have done to the buttons and menus in Windows Mobile 7, as in, that’s what they’ve made them. Yes, I could’ve called them ‘finger-friendly’, but since that amounts to little more than the word ‘big’, I used big. Mainly because I then got to do that explanation, and say big so many times I sounded like Professor Peach in The Italian Job. Which made me chortle, so yeah…
The ‘shiny’ refers, of course, to what they’ve done to the entire OS as a whole.
It’s clear they’re not just applying spit and polish, they’re dolloping it on in vast quantities. Well, you can see the differences to the current incarnation of Windows Mobile in the pic on this post. The top two screens are the current incarnation, and the bottom two are what’s purported to be Windows Mobile 7.
And I likes ‘em, except for one little detail. The battery and volume meters. Why are they down the bottom? That just looks daft. However, the new big keyboard looks nice. And hell, you know I’ll be excited about it when it gets released, same as I’m excited about Windows Mobile 6.5.
I’m intrigued how it’d run on the HTC HD2… now that‘d be a sight to see!
