Possibly the coolest custom Android ROM in the world EVER

Right then, one of the coolest bits about Android is that the OS is moddable; talented software type people, who are far cleverer than me, can fiddle about with the OS, and make it do things Google never thought of when they were making it. Well, one of the coolest things I’ve seen modders do is this, in the Paranoid Android custom ROM…

Dear god, that’s brilliant! It just looks like pure win, it really does, but the thing is that it’s not just cool looking. There’s actually a very good reason why the mod exists, I’d wager, and it’s not just because it looks funky as hell…

Y’see, the thing with the recent versions of Android is that Google put that black bar at the bottom of the screen, with the three shortcuts on it, the three shortcuts that people like HTC and Samsung put on actual softkeys, not on the screen, ‘cos that black bar just sits there eating screen real estate. That’s one of the things that annoys me about recent builds of Android, and it’s why I really like phones that stick to having softkeys below the screen.

Well, this new mod, with the circular pop-up menu thingie, allows a phone to not have softkeys, but to also not give up any screen real estate to that black bar…

And that, right, is brilliant. From the video, it also looks like it takes the status bar away from the top of the screen, so it’s adding on a nice big chunk of extra real estate, which is bound to make your phone’s screen look bigger. I call that a win, I do. Of course, not everyone can get access to this custom ROM (and even if they can, it still means rooting the phone), since it’s only available on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and the Nexus 4 that LG released.

However, once it ends up on other devices, I could be tempted to root my own phone, to get this…

About TechnicalMarkus

It's a little known fact Technical Markus has now beaten both his Transformers addiction AND his Mass Effect addiction, by replacing both with an equally obsessive addiction to XCOM: Enemy Unknown and buying Humble Bundles for his Android phone. At the moment, he's pondering the actual usefulness of smartwatches and smart glasses, even if the nerd in him is shouting for joy at how sci-fi they are. He spends his spare time being whinged at to figure out what's wrong with other people's mobile phones, and drinking unimaginable quantities of tea. With milk. And three sweeteners, thanks for asking. Oh, and he's got an HTC One X, but he reckons his next phone might be a Sony, the turncoat...
