Philips Xenium K700 - with battery that lasts a monthOver the months and years and decades and millennia that I’ve been writing this blog, there’s one name that’s consistently failed to crop up very much at all, ever, and that name is Philips. They’re not very well known for making mobile phones these days, y’see. In fact, the last time I even laid hands on a Philips phone was when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

It was 1997, and the sequel to Jurassic Park was in cinemas, y’see…

Now, though, they’ve made a phone that’s caught my attention. And it’s caught my attention for a simple reason: according to Engadget Mobile, the Philips Xenium K700 is a touchscreen phone that manages to squeeze a standby time of an entire month out of one single charge. That’s genuinely impressive, as well, as is the fact that it manages to do that from a slim 1000mAh battery, which means the phone itself is slim and unfeasibly pretty. The sleek, minimalist design helps it to look better, too.

However, I’ll predict that those will be about the only two good bits of the phone. I’ve got no clue what the interface’ll be like, but (since this is a feature phone, not a smartphone, I’d guess), it’s gonna be going up against the likes of the Samsung Jet (with the 3D superdupercubicoidalised TouchWiz front end) and the LG Viewty Smart (with the S-Class UI), and they aren’t easy beasties to top.

Oh, and then, of course, there’s the antenna it uses, which will just about manage EDGE data. That means no 3G, let alone HSDPA, and that means it’ll have a hard time competing against other feature phones that do have HSDPA.

So, if I have to sum my thoughts up, they’re as follows: nice phone, with an incredibly impressive battery life, but the likes of the Viewty Smart will kick its backside royally…
