Ah, Glastonbury’s nearly upon us once more, with mud, dancing, mud, face painting, mud, trying to somehow charge your phone in a field, and mud. Having never actually been to Glastonbury, I’ve never experienced the heady mix of music and mentalness (and mud) that makes the festival so popular. I would imagine, though, that charging your phone up in the middle of a field (full of mud) would be problematic, to say the least.
Never fear, though, because I’ve just read on our very own news section; they are here to save the day, with a brand new charging solution that doesn’t rely on mains sockets, and that has a name that always, without fail, makes me snigger.
Called the Power Pump (teeheehee), their answer to the dilemma of charging your phone out in the wilds of Somerset is a footpump. You know, the kind you use to blow up inflatable pillows (just before you put them on the groundsheet in your tent, in a vain attempt to stop the mud getting in). Only, instead of the footpump going to a pillow, it connects up to a little, air-driven turbine, that generates electricity, and charges your phone.
So, put simply, you use the footpump, it makes the turbine spin, bingo, it juices your phone up. Presumably, the Power Pump (teeheehee) will also come with a range of different plugs, so you can actually find one that fits your phone.
Orange reckon that in the time it’d take to fill up an inflatable pillow, you can give your phone enough of a charge for a 5 minute call, which is pretty cool. Plus, you’ll be getting a bit of healthy exercise in the fresh, countryside air.
Exercise? Blech, obviously not for me, then…
Of course, if the Toshiba TG01 is available before Glasto, that’s the phone to take with you, since you can lower the performance on the processor, and exponentially increase the battery life. That’d be rather useful.
There’s no word that the Power Pump (teeheehee) will ever be sold outside of Glasto, but it could well catch on, I reckon. Could be useful for any camping trip, not just a festival. So, I say to Orange, get it sold!
