Orange and Wikipedia to join forces for mobile content

Orange and Wikipedia join forcesSeems like all the big players on the internet are getting involved in mobile, these days, with the obvious one being Google. However, Facebook are out there in the mobile world, and now, according to IntoMobile, Wikipedia are making their play to get themselves mobilised.

Yep, the big online encyclopaedia has teamed up with Orange, to provide their content through the mobile network’s portal. It sounds like the content’s going to be web-based, with search bars included on Orange’s home page, and links from pertinent content through to Wiki.

Hmmm, might not be as ambitious as Google’s plans for world domination, but with operator support, and network tie-ups, this has the potential to be just as important.

Of course, there’s always the ever-present issue that Wikipedia isn’t always edited by the sharpest people, and the info on it really needs to be double-checked for academic essays. But hey, since the chances of you doing an academic essay purely using a Nokia N97 and Wiki, are slim (and will get you an instant fail), for finding out info on the fly, it’s going to be invaluable.

Apparently, the UK should be one of the first countries to get this, and since I’m actually on Orange, expect a full fiddle about with it when I get my grubby paws on it…
