New Palm Pre ad is, weirdly, both calming and ever-so-slightly creepy

Mobile phone adverts, in recent times, very often tend towards the bizarre. There’s that Samsung ad from yesterday, with its phone-piloting space robot thing, and let’s not forget all those T-Mobile ads with hundreds of people spontaneously breaking into song and dance in Liverpool Street Station and Trafalgar Square.

Now, the Palm Pre has joined the multitude of weird adverts, but in their case, as you’d expect from a phone that does things differently, their advert, erm, does things differently. Here you go, check it out:

Ok, that’s bizarre for a weird reason. Now, I know they’re going for calming and soothing, to show off how easy the Palm Pre is, and how much good karma it produces, so it only seems natural the ad would have a hippy-ish feel to it. What I wasn’t expecting was just how creepy it feels. I’m serious, the spokesperson, Canadian actress Tamara Hope, comes across almost like the kid in The Shining. I kept expecting her to break out and say “reeeeeeeeed ruuuuuuuuuummm”.

Still, it does do a good job of getting the main message across, and it’s this: WebOS is so good, that when you’re using it, it just feels like everything is going right, and you’re not even having to try to use it. As the advert says, you’re just going with the flow.

So, yes, great phone, but ever-so-slightly creepy advert…
