Vertu Ascent Ti Damascus SteelAh, here we go, another luxury phone for me to look at and moan about in slight disbelief, before picking it to bits. Hmmm, maybe my proletariat leanings are coming to the fore when I see a phone worth more than I am. Ah well, never mind. Today’s offering is another ludicrously expensive Nokia- er, Vertu phone, only this time, it’s going for the Sonim-style toughness.

Except it does it by being crafted from steel, according to IntoMobile.

The big thing Vertu are keen to play in the lengthily-named Vertu Ascent Ti Damascus Steel is the fact that the steel’s hardened using the same kind of ancient forging techniques that went into the making of samurai swords. To which I say, “What, the samurai swords that were forged for their cutting edge, not their strength, and that had a really brittle cutting edge, which would shatter in sword-on-sword fighting?”

Oh, alright, I’ll not be so cynical, I’ll assume they mean the steel’s been folded 93 million times. However, they’ve still missed a trick. If you’ve got a phone that’s based on sword-making techniques, surely a more apt name for it would be Damocles, not Damascus?

Anyway, specs-wise, I can tell you exactly what it is. Its specs are nearly bang on the same as the old Nokia 6500 Slide, with 3MP camera and S40 operating system. Considering it’ll probably cost more than its distant cousin, the Nokia N97, and not be as powerful as the N97… I’d buy the N97. But then, since they’re only making 100 of them, that won’t be an issue.

And the Sonim XP3 would kick it to death without even raising a sweat…

Sonim XP or Vertu? Which would YOU choose? Leave us a comment and have your say!
