Motorola Droid launched in USA, GSM version sneaks online

Motorola DroidWell, it’s happened. The Motorola Droid has been launched in the USA. It’s gone all official, and it looks very, very nice. Not that I’m jealous of America or anything. Just saying. But it really is a very nice phone, or more to the point, a very nice phone I can’t play with, because only the USA has got it.

Sorry, not jealous, forgot myself for a second there.

I was doubly excited when I found out this thing has the highest resolution screen on the mobile market, or, in other words, 854×480 pixels, higher than that of the HTC HD2 (although the HD2′s screen is physically bigger). You get those extra 54 pixels because the screen has, apparently, a true 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. So it’ll be perfect for playing back widescreen videos. And once again, I won’t get to play with it.

Of course, the screen is also capacitive, so it supports multi-touch. And it’s got a 5MP camera. And a whopping great 16Gb of internal memory.

I’m getting the feeling that where the Motorola DEXT is the smartphone for social networking lovers, the Droid is for media lovers, hence the 16:9 screen and massive storage. All of which makes it doubly annoying that I won’t get to play with it, not that I’m jealous of the USA, no sir, not me. Because the thing is, there’ll be a GSM version of it made, which means I will be able to play with it. And that GSM version has snuck out of its window to go and have wild parties appear in a Youtube preview video:

See? Sim card. That means GSM. That means the GSM version does exist. And that means there’s every chance I’ll finally get to play with the Motorola Droid. If Motorola could at all see fit to release it sooner rather than later, I’d be appreciative too, and let’s not forget that if this blog has proved one thing, it’s that I’m quite prepared to beg…
