More Palm Pre details emerge – new features aplenty

Palm Pre gets Office 2007 support, amongst other thingsAs we go through the excruciatingly long wait for the Palm Pre to get released on these shores, some more details have popped up that are going to make the wait even harder.

Seriously, Palm, at least announce the damn thing for the UK, the wait’s getting painful!

Anyhow… according to IntoMobile, the new specs are quite an appealing addition to the arsenal of cool stuff the Palm Pre has already got. The big new feature’s going to appeal to the enterprise crowd, and who knows, maybe even to some budding mobile authors out there, because the Palm Pre will officially support Office 2007 documents. Which is annoying because not even my PC will support Office 2007 documents. Ah well.

Next up is something that I’m guessing might not be a commonplace occurrence in America, because it’s the ability to use your own music as ringtones. Hardly groundbreaking stuff, we’ve all been doing that for yeaaaaaaaaaars over here, but at least it’s nice to know you’ll be able to do it on the Palm Pre. Oh, and as for instant messaging, yes, it’ll let you have multiple concurrent IMs up at once, presumably meaning you can chat to more than one person at once. Again, not groundbreaking, but it’s nice to know it’s there.

Finally, though, there’s something I really do like, although… it’s not confirmed whether this feature will only be available on the US version, or whether we’ll get it too: free online backup of all your Palm Pre’s contents, via Palm themselves. Now, I use the MyPhone online backup thingy on my Sony Ericsson X1, so I know how nice it is to have that feature to hand. Here’s hoping our version of the Palm Pre does get it, because that will make it properly rock.

The question is, though, whether that’ll be enough to make the Palm Pre really stand out, because the HTC Magic is out now, and it’s getting some seriously good reviews (and yep, we’re going to have our very own review of it soon), there’s the Nokia N97 to worry about, and of course, there’ll be another new iPhone in the summer.

I’m beginning to get the nagging suspicion that if they don’t get their act together soon, then the Palm Pre might not be so good a prospect when it finally reaches the UK…
