This is one of those phone-related stories that made me instantly, and I mean instantly, prick up my ears and go “AWESOME!” in a Keanu Reeves/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-style way.
As we all know by now development is well underway on stuff for the Google Android platform, due to be making its way into phones this year. The race is on to make cool stuff, and since Android’s open source, ANYONE can build software for it.
Well, thanks to the following Youtube vid, I believe I have found the single greatest idea for a mobile game ever, WiFi Army.
Yep, that’s right, it’s a first-person shooter, but the real world around you is your arena. So, you have to hunt down enemy soldiers (ie/ other WiFi Army players with Android phones) using GPS, then hunt them down and “kill them” by using the phone’s camera, with a simulated crosshairs on the screen.
It’s just beyond description how cool that is. It’s like Halo meets LaserQuest (remember that? do they even still have them any more??), and you get all the intense, sweaty-palmed action of video games, with exercise from legging it round your local city, hunting down your enemy to virtually shoot them.
It’s such a patently mental but obviously genius idea that just this game, by itself, has got me more excited about Android than anything before!
You can find more info at the WiFi Army website. Although, be aware, the game appears to only support the USA at the mo. That had better change, though!!

Thanks for writing about WiFi Army. We are equally excited- in a Ninja Turtles kind of way.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like an inside scoop of the dev process.
Thanks again
