Okay, folks, you know me well enough by now to know that I like my phones big and powerful; that’s why I love my HD2, and it’s why I’m getting a little bit overexcited about the Nexus S. Most manufacturers have brought out uber-phones, now, but one of the notable ones who hadn’t really brought out anything that caught my attention (yet) was LG.
However, notice how I’m speaking in the past tense, there? Yes, LG have finally caught my attention, because according to our news section, (who beat me to the scoop, dammit!) they’ve just announced world’s first actual (ie/ not concept) mobile phone running on the frankly awesome Tegra2 processor.
And that’s awesome, because the Tegra2 is a dual-core processor. So, what that means is that the LG Optimus 2X will be phenomenally fast. Seriously, this thing’s going to go like a rocket; whether that means its battery will run out of juice in about 38 seconds, though, remains to be seen (which is a real possibility, considering it’s also rocking a 4 inch screen). That could potentially be a worry, since it only includes a 1500mAh battery, which is pretty standard for modern smartphones, and we know how long most of them last on a charge…
However, the news section beat me to the punch on reporting about this beastie, but in a way, this is a good thing. Because it now means I can do mine as an opinion piece, and say what I really think, instead of objectively reporting the facts. If it helps, think of this as constructive criticism, instead of me being a git.
Anyway, what I think is this: it’s about bleedin’ time!
Seriously, what have you been playing at, LG?
I’m no’ kiddin’, Android’s been on the market for, what, two years now, and the only phone of note you’ve stuck it on is the LG GT540 Optimus. Fair enough, that’s a competent enough phone, and yes, I know I called the best mid-range PAYG smartphone this Christmas, but that’s the thing, isn’t it? It’s mid-range. And in the mid-range, it gets its bum kicked by the HTC Wildfire; quite frankly, the only reason it won in that category on my PAYG blog post thing was because it’s so cheap.
Meanwhile, in the uber-high-end category, you’ve released precisely nothing, and because of that, your nemesis Samsung has steamrollered you up the top-end. They’ve had the Galaxy S, and you’ve had, well, nowt.
Still, if this was all part of your plan, then fair enough; I also have to admire your bravery, because the timing of this means you’re going to be putting it up against the Nexus S, and that is a brave thing to do, because the Nexus S looks phenomenal. So, while I admire your cojones, I lament the fact it took you so long to grow said appendages.
All that remains now is for me to beg LG to hurry up and get it released. And you know what that means! Yep, it’s time to roll out Puss In Boots again…
Pretty please, LG, get the Optimus 2X released over here in Blighty, ASAP. And if at all possible, send me a free one to faff about with. I promise I’ll be nice to it…
