Handy-dandy HTC infographic teases new camera tech in their next phone

I did a post, yesterday, about the upcoming HTC M7, and how it’s rumoured to use ‘ultrapixels‘ in its camera (long story short, it’s said to have three image sensors instead of one, which combine their image-y magic into one picture, that’s three times sharper… well, more or less, anyway). I wondered, as I wrote that post, how accurate the rumour was, but this latest nugget of info from the official HTC blog seems to suggest that yes, it really was true.

Well, alright, that specific rumour may not be true, ‘cos that source link doesn’t comment directly on that one, but HTC is definitely cooking something up. Y’see, the source link contains an infographic, only it’s not really an infographic, ‘cos it’s a (not so) cunningly hidden sales ploy by HTC…

Basically, it’s an infographic detailing the history of the camera, from the early days of Daguerre, right up to the here and now. Naturally, since HTC makes phones, a big chunk of the infographic is given over to camera phones (and it also includes a pop at the 8MP camera in the likes of the iPhone 5 which, as much as I don’t like Apple, isn’t very classy at all; bad form, HTC). Noticeably, what the infographic seems to focus on (ha, pun!) is the Megapixel Wars, where everyone’s been trying to outdo each other in terms of raw pixel counts. HTC seems to suggest that they think this is bad…

And then, we get to 2013, and the infographic says, “HTC kicks off a new sound and camera experience in 2013.”

So, they’re up to something. If they’re having a pop at the Megapixel Wars in there, then it logically follows that what they’re teasing is not just a camera that adds, well, more megapixels (oh, and there, they also have a pop at the PureView camera tech from Nokia, while completely missing the point of that oversampling tech in the first place; another bit of bad form, there, HTC). S, they must be doing something new with the megapixels they already have.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that the whole point of ultrapixels? Thus, the rumour could be true. Or it could be something else entirely, some new bit of sorcery that’s not ultrapixels.

Anyway, we shall find out for certain, in the fullness of time (i.e. February 19th, at their big unveiling)…
