Else ‘sPlay’ UI detailed in frighteningly exhaustive walkthrough

Now then, I’ve talked about the First Else phone before, with unique (and I mean unique) user interface, that has the various control fanning out from the side of the phone, designed to make it perfect for one-handed use (as long as you’re right-handed, that is). We’ve seen bits here and there about it, showing off sneak peeks of that interface, but now it’s time for a proper walkthrough. As in a 20 minute walkthrough. Here, take a look:

First things first: ooh, a proper name for the UI. It’s now officially called the sPlay UI. And my god does it look unique! It really is pure sci-fi, through and through. Everyone who knows me should know my complete, obsessive love of sci-fi, so it should come as absolutely no surprise that I think I’m a little bit in love with sPlay. I really, really like the fact it looks like something straight out of Bladerunner, or Minority Report. Oh, and it’s not just the interface that’s pure sci-fi: check out Else Mobile’s website. Pure Hollywood, that.

As we all know, the interface is one of the hardest fought battlegrounds in the world of modern mobile phones, and the fight got considerably more interesting when Windows Phone 7 Series was announced. I’ve been watching the 7 Series news online, and it’s fair to say I’m, er, a tad excited about it all (especially if, as many predict, the HTC HD2 gets an upgrade to it). Well, Else Mobile have got me as excited as Microsoft has. That’s how cool I reckon the sPlay UI looks.

Of course, my concerns about it being damn near unusable for southpaws remain, but since I myself am not left-handed, I can’t honestly say I care that much, since the sPlay is more sci-fi than any other UI out there…
