If I say the name ZTE to you, what type of phone do you immediately think of? A mid-range Android smartphone that’s got surprisingly good specs for the price? Yeah, well, you’re not alone in that view, ‘cos that’s the first thought that pops into my head, as well. However, it looks like we may have to do some rethinking of our definitions, folks, ‘cos according to Engadget, ZTE’s only gone and made a phone that’s more powerful than virtually every other phone, in the entire world.
So, what’s the crack, then? Has ZTE really made a phone that outclasses 99% of the market, including superstar phones from the likes of Samsung and HTC, or is there some fatal flaw, that’ll mean the phone’s not actually that appealing?
Well, at first glance, things are definitely looking good for the phone, dubbed the ZTE Grand S. It’s got a 5 inch screen, and that screen has got a 1080p resolution, which is pretty chuffing impressive in and of itself. However, it’s also got a Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, clocked to 1.7GHz, 2GB of RAM (plus 16GB of storage and a microSD slot), and a 13MP camera on the back (plus a 2MP camera on the front). That’s just… okay, come on, seriously, how is it possible for ZTE to make a phone that’s got damn near the same specs as the phone that Sony unveiled yesterday, the Sony Xperia Z?!
Ah, but there’s a big difference, and that’s where the ZTE Grand S is a tiny bit of a let-down.
Y’see, the phone’s only 6.9mm thick, which is brilliant and everything, but it means that there’s not a lot of room to put stuff in there. And what’s the bit where a sacrifice has been made? The battery, ‘cos it’s only got a 1,780mAh battery inside it, as opposed to the whopping great beast of a thing inside the Xperia Z. Normally that wouldn’t be such an issue, but when a phone’s running a 5 inch 1080p screen, and a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, the battery capacity suddenly becomes a really important issue.
So, basically, a great looking phone, with awesome specs, but the battery’ll only last thirty-eight seconds…
