Eep, is the ceramic finish on the HTC One S suffering from chips?

Hmm, now then, this might be disappointing news if it’s not an isolated case. You remember how I mentioned that the HTC One S had a ceramic coating of the type commonly used on satellites, and how that was very, very cool, and also, how it had made me have brief second thoughts about grabbing the HTC One X?

Yeah, well, that might not be the case, now, because according to the XDADevelopers forum, there may be a bit of a problem with the HTC One S. Specifically, there may be a problem with that really cool ceramic finish on the phone. Apparently, that ceramic coating may in fact be falling off with alarming rapidity, which ain’t good when that’s the coolest bit of the phone…

So, what’s going on, here? Well, there’s two schools of thought. The first suggests that the micro arc oxidation process might not be working properly, meaning that the ceramic coating isn’t bonding properly to the aircraft-grade aluminium beneath it. That’d be worrying, since it amounts to a huge flaw in the manufacturing process of the HTC One S.

The other, more prosaic theory is that people have dropped their phones, and don’t want to own up…

I’m hoping it’s the second one, though, ‘cos I do really want HTC to make a success of the One range, and having one of the launch phones be a bit of a lemon doesn’t bode well for that happening. Which would be a sad thing, if true, so I have to hope it’s the second school of thought that’s the more accurate one. If it’s not, and if it really is a problem in the manufacturing process, I can only hope HTC get it fixed, stat. Still, at least the polycarbonate shell on the HTC One X is, by all accounts, smurfing lovely. I guess I do know which phone I’m getting, after all.

Y’know, just in case…

About TechnicalMarkus

It's a little known fact Technical Markus has now beaten both his Transformers addiction AND his Mass Effect addiction, by replacing both with an equally obsessive addiction to XCOM: Enemy Unknown and buying Humble Bundles for his Android phone. At the moment, he's pondering the actual usefulness of smartwatches and smart glasses, even if the nerd in him is shouting for joy at how sci-fi they are. He spends his spare time being whinged at to figure out what's wrong with other people's mobile phones, and drinking unimaginable quantities of tea. With milk. And three sweeteners, thanks for asking. Oh, and he's got an HTC One X, but he reckons his next phone might be a Sony, the turncoat...
