A few months back, a story leaked online about a new Mobile Internet Device called the Dell Streak, which actually had a phone dialler in it, thus making it a phone. In fact, what it was, actually, was a phone with a five inch screen. Even next to my favoured phone of choice, the HD2, that’s huge. Since then, we’ve heard no more news about it, so I let it drift away from my mind.
Today, it’s coming slamming back into my mind, because according to Pocket Lint, the Godzilla-esque Dell monster is being shown off at the CES in Las Vegas. And there was one thing I wasn’t expecting:
Cor blimey, it’s pretty!
Oh, and also, not only do we now know it has a phone dialler (well, it would, running on Android), but Dell have confirmed it’s also got a sim card slot. So it is a proper, actual, no messing mobile phone. Only it’s, and I feel this needs reiterating, a mobile phone with a five-bleedin’-inch screen.
I never thought I’d see a phone that makes the HTC HD2 look small by comparison…
The question is, though, whether the Dell Streak (which, I should point out, probably isn’t its actual name, and Dell wouldn’t be drawn on what its real name is, in typical Dell fashion) is actually any good. My gut reaction is that it’s a Dell, so yes, of course it will be, certainly if you take it as a mobile web platform-y type thing. That vast screen is going to be properly nice to view web pages on, and it’s big enough to mean you won’t necessarily need a laptop along with it.
But then my other gut reaction is this: Arrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhh, run for your lives, it’s huge! Look at it! It’s vast! It could run amok through downtown Tokyo! Flee! Flee!
Er, yes. I’m still dying to have a muck about with one. But like I said before, I reckon this could even be too big for my tastes, and considering how badly I want the HTC HD2, that’s saying something…
