I can remember a time, ages and ages ago, when LG phones were a bit of a joke. And they really were, about 3-4 years ago. God-awful things, they were. The thing is, though, that when you don’t have a very good pedigree, you can really easily shock everyone by making one of the best-selling and most iconic mobile phones of all time.
Yes, I’m talking about the one and only LG Viewty, the only phone that properly, genuinely, so very nearly tempted me away from Sony Ericsson. It was, quite frankly, astounding, and it’s still one of the biggest success stories ever, selling gawd knows how many units. It even sells well today, over a year after it was released. And frankly, if you were LG, wouldn’t you want to recapture the same effect again?
Well, according to NewMobile, they may soon do that, because the LG Viewty 2 is looming on the horizon…
Obviously, we need to discount my theory that the LG Renoir is the successor to the Viewty, then, because apparently it’s not. Hmm, how best to describe it…? Ooh, I know, the LG Viewty 2 is the sequel in the franchise, the LG Renoir is the arthouse spin-off movie. Arthouse? Named after an Impressionist painter? Ah, forget it…
So, what can we expect from the sequel to one of the biggest blockbusters ever (I’m going to keep using the movie analogy even if it kills me)? Well, according to the specs, the LG Viewty 2 is reported to have a 3 inch touchscreen, sporting a massive WVGA (that’s 800×480) resolution, double the resolution of the Renoir. And with 5MP being so passé, it sports an 8 megapixel camera, with all the photo gubbins that are becoming standard on the top-enders, these days, like smile shutter, face detection, and all that malarkey. Oh, and it’ll have the super slow-mo video mode that was the big, stand-out awesome bit on the first Viewty. Oh, and expect HSDPA, GPS and a memory card slot that’ll take up to 32Gb.
Oh yes, and the new S-Class interface from the LG Arena…
In terms of looks, it’s being described as looking a bit like the LG Secret, but without the keypad. There’s no word on prices or availability yet (well, there’s not even any photos of it yet), so we’ll all have to make do with gazing longingly at the spec sheet, even though it appears to be in Dutch.
Nevertheless, even just on the name, I firmly predict LG will sell a gazillion of ‘em…
