Now here’s an interesting story, reported by Mobile Choice Magazine: Acer, one of the lynchpins of the laptop and PC world, are eyeing up the mobile phone market, and we may very well be seeing Acer mobile phones as early as the first quarter of next year.
I’m guessing we can expect some reasonably high-end smartphones, very possibly along the lines of the Windows Mobile devices HTC chucks out, like that mock-up I made, just over there to the right, look.
It’s clear they mean to use mobile phones to spread themselves into other markets. As Jim Wong, senior corporate vice president and president of IT product business group at Acer, stated, “Leveraging on its global channels and market share in the global PC market, Acer expects the handset business to be a growth driver within three years.”
Now, I’m in two minds about this. On the one hand, it’s always brilliant to see new people popping into the world of mobile phones, and bringing out new gadgets and gizmos. On the other hand, my experience of Acer is limited to one laptop, belonging to my sister. And we’ve been forced to use that laptop, since I fried my PC, until my new PC arrived.
And that’s the laptop that, when she sent it off for repair, it came back without a modem. Or a battery. That’s right, they sent us back a laptop that we can only use when it’s plugged into the wall!
Now, to be fair, although it was a repair under warranty, I don’t know who repaired it (since it’s not my laptop), so it might not’ve been Acer. And me sister probably should’ve contacted them to sort it when she got it back.
The laptop still hates me, though, it always goes wrong when I try and use it.
So, that’s why I’m in two minds. However, as long as they make mobile phones that don’t actively try to ruin my day, I’ll probably like them.
I just wish Dell would get their backsides in gear and enter the mobile phone market. They seriously impressed me by building and sending out my new PC, to me, in ONE working day from ordering it.
So, yes, Acer, make a phone that doesn’t hate me. Dell, get mobile phones made. Now.
