Us folks here in Great Britain, we love our texting, we do. I mean, that’s patently obvious to anyone who’s ever seen someone with a mobile phone. Or been in the pub when people there have mobile phones. Or someone who has a mobile phone. There’s no getting away from it, we Brits love to text. However, new statistics (as reported by IntoMobile) have shown us just how much we love to text. Yep, that’s right. As in the title of this blog post, us Brits sent, last year, an average of 11 million text messages.
Every. Single. Hour…
Blimey, that’s a lot of text messages, that is. That works out, over the year, as 96.8 billion messages. That’s how many we as a nation sent in 2009. ‘Tis quite a hefty number, that is.
Of course, the real question is how many of them made sense, and I’d postulate that figure is a loooooooooooot smaller. Even with people who’ve got a phone with a proper QWERTY keyboard on it (I’m thinking something like the Nokia N900), I bet the vast majority of text messages were in txt spk. And no, I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, ‘cos we’re all guilty of it, including me. But then, I make a living as a writer, I’m allowed to not write properly when I’m not being paid to…
So, yes. The British. Love text messages. And apparently, we love ‘em more every year. So maybe next year we can finally hit that magic one hundred billion mark…
