I’ve not had many dalliances in the ways of love, being resolutely single, and enjoying my own company, but as an intelligent observer, I kinda know how the whole relationship thing goes. Boy meets girl, boy and girl get together, boy and girl fall out over something personal (very possibly, but not necessarily, involving the word ‘premature’), and everyone moves on.
However, a story from The Washington Post suggests that technology, like Facebook, Twitter and text messaging, may be turning into one of the important things potential couples judge their compatibility on.
Is textual intercourse replacing the, er, other kind?
Take the case of Liberty Jones, a Washington publicist, who said that if someone texts her twice without returning her calls, they’re dumped. She tells the tale of her once-boyfriend, whose idea of touching base involved sending her a text, and not an actual case of the 2nd variety.
Apparently, the people hardest hit by this phenomenon are those in their 30′s, which means I’ve had it. Allegedly, people over 40 are used to talking on the phone and will predominantly do that. But people under 25 are more tech-savvy, and fluent in different types of communication, so they’re more likely to all be Twitter, or Facebook, and not get phased by it.
Apparently, anyway.
Of course, maybe this isn’t just a tech phenomenon. Maybe it’s actually just the problem that’s plagued men and women form the dawn of time, in that we can never know what’s going on in our partners’ heads, or maybe it’s down to the old battle of the sexes, yet again.
Maybe women are from Venus, and men are from Halford’s…
Of course, if you’re lucky enough to actually find someone with the same text habits as you, you’ll need a phone that can keep up. Nokia N97. Trust me. QWERTY keyboard, y’see…
