Mobile broadband evolves with the 3 Wireless Router

Mobile Broadband evolves - 3 Wireless RouterWhen mobile broadband first came out, everybody (me included) went, “Ooooooh.” It was new, it was exciting, and it let your laptop’s broadband internet connection be as portable and versatile as your mobile phone. The other thing that a lot (and I mean a lot) of people said was, “So, is it a wireless router, as well?”

Well, it wasn’t then, but now it is, with the launch of the brilliant new 3 Wireless Router!

The principle behind it’s laughably simple. It’s a wireless router (obviously), and therefore acts just like any other wireless router. The big difference, though, is that this is designed to work specifically on 3 mobile broadband, with a 3 USB Modem (and yes, it needs to be with a 3 USB Modem).

You plug in the USB modem to the wireless router, power her up, and then you can connect up to four laptops, or PCs, or Macs or WiFi devices to the router, through, you guessed it, WiFi, effectively getting broadband on up to four devices simultaneously, using just one USB Modem.

That leads onto the good bit. All of this means that you can get wireless broadband without needing to set up a landline. So, if you don’t want, or can’t get, a landline, you can still get wireless broadband with the 3 Wireless Router. And of course, it’s a doddle to set up as it’s completely Plug&Play, there’s no wires to worry about, and it looks funky, too.

With the new 3 Wireless Router, mobile broadband has evolved. Check it out today!

Sounds very promising as i dont use my landline.

BUT!! Does xbox live work on it??

if so then i will ditch my landline and sign up tomorrow!!

Well, I’ve checked with 3, and they say no, I’m afraid. It isn’t compatible with the Xbox, unfortunately.

  • michael

kl, as its wireless, can i connect my PS3 to it?

  • TechnicalMarkus

Again, checked with 3, they say no, it’s not compatible with games consoles, presumably down to the usage (which’d be a lot higher).

Can I use it as a WIFI for my ipod touch?
    Mo

I’m having trouble confirming this with 3, but my guess (and my advice) would be this:

Since you’ll be using it for web access, and not for gaming (the data allowance on the account being the concern with games consoles), you’re on safer ground, but we have no 100% official confirmation it WILL work with the iPod Touch.

Can I use it as a WIFI for my wii

  • TechnicalMarkus

‘Fraid not, once again, it isn’t compatible with games consoles, according to 3.

  • sam

    Does it work with linux?

  • TechnicalMarkus

If you’re talking about netbooks with WiFi on, like the Eee PC, then again, according to the info we’ve had, they SHOULD work ok. It appears to, at the moment, just be games consoles that aren’t supported, with the grey area over the iPod Touch and iPhone.

I have an Acer Aspire-One (not the new one with 3g in it)with Linux on it and a Nokia E71, both of which have Wifi. So I’m guessing these would work with the router? I’m also guessing no software needs to be installed to use the router?

Does it need to be plugged into the mains? and does also have a wired network port to use with the Acer maybe?

Also do you know where I could buy one as it seems at Car Phone Warehouse will only sell you one if you buy a 3 USB Modem at the same time!
As there are two 3 USB Modem in my house already I was not planning on buying yet another one just to get the router?

    Thanks for any feedback :)

  • Alan

In answer to my own question ‘where to buy’ I found it on the Three website, although it took some searching. So here is the link :)

I have ordered one and hopefully in a few days I can answer my other questions and maybe one or two others.
    :)

  • MandenG

I use the iPod touch with the 3-Network D-100 wifi router no problem at all :)

  • TechnicalMarkus

Ah-ha! Thanks for confirming that for us, MandenG!

There you go, there’s your answer on the iPod Touch situation.

  • Dean

    Hiya All,
I just want to verify that you can in fact use Three wireless router on Xbox Live, Nintendo Network, Wii, Laptop, and any other wireless device, and Yes it then shows up on your Hotspot list after you put your Wep key in, I bought this device in December last year, and the first thing I did when I got home was to test out this theory, so I put the Wep key in all my consoles, as well as my laptop, and they all connected without any problems what so ever, so for those who said you cannot use it on Xbxo Live etc, your so wrong, because take it from me I have tried, and tested this bit of hardware, and it will come in very handy for when I have to have new phone line installed, I can use it to use on all my consoles, as well as my laptop, so Gtreat news for you all who are still unsure about this wireless router!

    Regards Deano

  • TechnicalMarkus

    Cheers for that Dean. :-)

Well, that kinda puts the tin-hat on what Three told me! There you go folks, it looks like it SHOULD work after all.

  • Bruce

Hi, do you know if you can get 2 USB modems on the same account so I can use it on my laptop while travelling and my wife can use it at home via the 3 wireless router?

    Thanks

  • prema

    hi ;O)
was reading your concersations ,and wondering if it is possible to connect the mobilephne to the router ?
my problem ist that …. i have an ipod touch and want to connect to the internet of my mobilephone (sonyericsson c905) have an 3 contract going on it …
    thanks

  • TechnicalMarkus

Hmmm, that’s an interesting question. As far as I know, no, there’s no way to do that, since the router connects via USB, and is designed to work with the drivers and software in the USB Modem itself.

A phone won’t have that software, so I’m saying no, it won’t work.

  • Glenn
