Blackberry Q5 unveiled – QWERTY’d-up BB10 goodness in an affordable body

I’ve been something of a scathing critic of Blackberry phones of olde (mainly because they were usually duffers), but I have to admit that with the launch of Blackberry 10, the company’s really upped its game; while I’m still not entirely sure that it’ll singlehandedly manage to turn round the manufacturer’s somewhat ailing fortunes, I have to admit that the Blackberry Z10 is a really rather nice phone.

When that phone was announced, they also unveiled the Blackberry Q10, a QWERTY’d-up equivalent to their flagship, and now, they’ve unveiled a new mid-range version of that phone. It’s called the Blackberry Q5, and as you can see, it looks rather sweet… (more…)

Sony Honami – top secret superphone with a world-beating camera?

My feelings on the Sony Xperia Z are well documented, but since I’ve never been known to avoid repeating myself, I’ll tell you them again: the Sony Xperia Z is possibly the greatest phone that’s ever been unveiled, and it’s a strong contender for my phone of the year, even though there’s still another seven months to go before we hit 2014.

However, it seems that Sony aren’t resting on their laurels, if the latest rumour about the Japanese manufacturer is to be believed. Y’see, according to VR-Zone, they’re working on a new phone codenamed the Sony Honami, and it’s not just going to be powerful; if the rumour’s true, it’s also going to have an absolute monster of a camera. So, what’s the crack? (more…)

Nokia investing in ‘light-field camera’ company Pelican Imaging

Other than the UltraPixel camera in the HTC One, and the PureView tech in the Nokia 808 PureView, mobile camera hardware is sort of a bit samey; basically, you stick more megapixels in, and call it a day. Well, that’s may well change, thanks to a really cool thing being developed by Pelican Imaging…

Now that is cool, and given that Nokia has decided to invest in Pelican Imaging, I’m willing to bet we can expect big thing from them in future. So, how does this new wondertech work, then? (more…)

Are Motorola planning a phone where you pick your own hardware spec?

Hmm, I reckon I’m going to have to categorise this story as ‘really very intriguing if true, but take it with a pinch, nae, an entire EU mountain of salt’. In fact that might not be enough salt; we’d best start strip-mining the Bonneville Salt Flats so we’ve got enough. Of course, there’s always that slim possibility that it’s true, and if it is, well, it could well end up being really cool.

Y’see, there’s a rumour going about that the upcoming X Phone, by Motorola, is in fact not going to be one phone. No, the rumour is that it’ll be a customisable package, where you pick the hardware spec for your phone, and according to DroidLife, that possibility’s now been hinted at by someone within Motorola(more…)

Blimey, LG are proper cheeky little scallywags, aren’t they?

Right, don’t panic, change of plan, folks!

Y’see, this blog post was supposed to be all about the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S4, right, but since that’s not happening until 11pm in the UK (‘cos they’re unveiling it in New York, y’see), that post will be happening tomorrow. So, that leaves me with a gap to fill today, and I’ve found just the thing to talk about.

The reason being that when I read about it, I nearly fell off my chair laughing.

According to Korea Newswire (Google-translated link), the crack is that LG has got a marketing department staffed entirely by trolls… (more…)

Should Samsung sell the Galaxy S3 as a cheap, mid-range phone?

Right then, we should all know by now that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is getting unveiled tomorrow; you’d have to be living under a moderately massive rock to not be aware of it, since pretty much everyone is talking about it. However, there’s a part of me wonders what their next mid-range phone will be like, ‘cos there’s usually some new mid-ranger that comes out not long after, to capitalise on the flagship’s success (the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini springs immediately to mind).

And then, I read a post on PocketNow, and it made such an incredible amount of sense to me, that I had to do a post about it, here. The basic crux of it is this: what if Samsung didn’t make a mid-range version of the Galaxy S4? (more…)

HTC to dump the ‘Quietly Brilliant’ schtick, and go on the offensive

My love for HTC is well documented on this here blog (even though the Sony Xperia Z is still turning my head, damnably awesome beastie that it is), but I’m not completely blind to the realities of the Taiwanese manufacturer’s situation; specifically, I know they need to make a triumphant comeback, and a big part of the problem with ‘old’ HTC was their marketing.

So, something needed to change, and according to Jason Mackenzie, HTC’s global president of sales (speaking in an interview with Fierce Wireless), the bit that’s changing is their whole “quietly brilliant” ethos.

So, what’s the crack? (more…)

Sony’s not hanging about – prototype Firefox phone already shown off

Well, I’ll say this for Sony; when they get an idea in their head, and get the bit between their teeth, they really don’t hang about. Only yesterday, I did a post about how they’re planning on making a Firefox OS phone, and today, they’ve released video of it in action…

Okay, I’m a bit disappointed, ‘cos there’s precisely no way that’s the same spec as the glorious Sony Xperia Z. Yeah, that really doesn’t look like a super high-spec phone… (more…)

Sony planning on releasing a Firefox OS phone next year?

TechnicalMarkus Posted on: February 26th, 2013

After the unveiling of the Sony Xperia Z, it’s fair to say that my waning interest in Sony Mobile has skyrocketed once more; it’s a truly awesome phone, that singlehandedly makes up for their years of making pretty but kinda lacklustre Android phones, and quite frankly, I adore the thing.

Basically, Sony are back in my good books.

One thing that’s not in my good books, however, is Firefox OS, not least because the Firefox phones unveiled thus far have been, quite frankly, rubbish. What the platform needs is a proper flagship, and it seems like there might be a possibility that it’ll get one, because according to Engadget, Sony’s looking at making a Firefox phone… (more…)

Samsung gets cheeky at MWC 2013, hands out invites to their OWN event

Y’know, I have to love the sheer chutzpah that Samsung shows; I’m almost tempted to label them as word-class trolls, if I’m honest. We’ve seen it before, in their adverts, we’ve seen it from time to time in their dealings with Apple (and their ripping on Apple Maps), and now, we’ve seen it in the way they’ve been handing out invites to a non-MWC event at MWC.

Yes, according to Engadget, the happy-go-lucky staffers at the Samsung booth have been handing out invitations to their own Samsung Unpacked event, due to happen in New York, on March 14th.

Anyhow, forget about the cheek for a second, ‘cos you know what they must be unveiling… (more…)
