Y’know what? I actually quite like the Blackberry Z10. It’s a decent little phone, and although it gets thoroughly trounced (in every conceivable way except one, namely the Blackberry email service) by super star Android phones like the Sony Xperia Z1, I always had a soft spot for the plucky little underdog. The thing is, though, that I’m apparently one of few who seem to actually like it, ‘cos it’s fair to say that Blackberry’s position in the market has not improved since its release; hell, Blackberry even put the company up for sale, so yeah. Not the best.

Y’know how I’ve said, many, many times, that I completely abhor the sort of marketing tactics that have become commonplace in this industry? You know the kind I mean, the ones where it’s not enough to just show people why your phone’s good, and you have to slag off everybody else’s phones? The one Apple does a lot? Yeah, that one.
Well according to Bloomberg Businessweek, Samsung’s been caught taking that idea one step further, in a really underhanded way that, it turns out, has landed ’em in legal trouble. And by legal trouble, I mean that Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission has fined Samsung the equivalent of around £210,000. So, what exactly has been occurring, then? Continue reading
People have been talking about flexible screens for absolutely ages, although to be fair, since the tech to make curved screens has existed for quite a while now, we have been waiting a long time for ’em. Even today, we’re still waiting, although according to an article from Reuters, we might not have to wait too much longer.
Yes, Samsung is allegedly gearing up to announce a new phone next month, and if the rumour’s true, said phone is going to have a curved screen. Sure, that’s not the same as announcing a bendy phone, but hey, it’s a step in the right direction, right?
So, what might this elusive unknown smartphone actually be like? Continue reading
Welp, this has been heavily rumoured for the past few weeks, but now it’s actually come to fruition. Robert Downey Jr. has become the new face of HTC, as part of their new “Change” campaign. Have a look at his first appearance…
I tell ye what, everyone’s been saying that HTC’s marketing needed a shot in the arm, mainly because it was useless, but such shots in the arm don’t come much bigger than the star of the Iron Man movies, Sherlock Holmes, and Tropic Thunder, and no mistake! So, what’s the crack? Continue reading
I really do know that I don’t need to say this again, but yet again, I’m going to say it anyway: I love HTC. I’ve loved them for ages, and I still love them, even though they’ve completely failed on their promise to finally do some decent marketing on their phones and, therefore, still have utterly useless marketing. I also still love them in spite of a load of high level executives jumping ship in recent months.
Speaking of those executives, two of them have gone on to form their own phone manufacturer, and according to CNet, the company is called Kazam.
So, what can we expect from this new player in the Game of Mobiles (Game of Thrones reference FTW)? Let’s take a look… Continue reading
I’ve been something of a scathing critic of Blackberry phones of olde (mainly because they were usually duffers), but I have to admit that with the launch of Blackberry 10, the company’s really upped its game; while I’m still not entirely sure that it’ll singlehandedly manage to turn round the manufacturer’s somewhat ailing fortunes, I have to admit that the Blackberry Z10 is a really rather nice phone.
When that phone was announced, they also unveiled the Blackberry Q10, a QWERTY’d-up equivalent to their flagship, and now, they’ve unveiled a new mid-range version of that phone. It’s called the Blackberry Q5, and as you can see, it looks rather sweet… Continue reading
My feelings on the Sony Xperia Z are well documented, but since I’ve never been known to avoid repeating myself, I’ll tell you them again: the Sony Xperia Z is possibly the greatest phone that’s ever been unveiled, and it’s a strong contender for my phone of the year, even though there’s still another seven months to go before we hit 2014.
However, it seems that Sony aren’t resting on their laurels, if the latest rumour about the Japanese manufacturer is to be believed. Y’see, according to VR-Zone, they’re working on a new phone codenamed the Sony Honami, and it’s not just going to be powerful; if the rumour’s true, it’s also going to have an absolute monster of a camera. So, what’s the crack? Continue reading
Other than the UltraPixel camera in the HTC One, and the PureView tech in the Nokia 808 PureView, mobile camera hardware is sort of a bit samey; basically, you stick more megapixels in, and call it a day. Well, that’s may well change, thanks to a really cool thing being developed by Pelican Imaging…
Now that is cool, and given that Nokia has decided to invest in Pelican Imaging, I’m willing to bet we can expect big thing from them in future. So, how does this new wondertech work, then? Continue reading
Hmm, I reckon I’m going to have to categorise this story as ‘really very intriguing if true, but take it with a pinch, nae, an entire EU mountain of salt’. In fact that might not be enough salt; we’d best start strip-mining the Bonneville Salt Flats so we’ve got enough. Of course, there’s always that slim possibility that it’s true, and if it is, well, it could well end up being really cool.
Y’see, there’s a rumour going about that the upcoming X Phone, by Motorola, is in fact not going to be one phone. No, the rumour is that it’ll be a customisable package, where you pick the hardware spec for your phone, and according to DroidLife, that possibility’s now been hinted at by someone within Motorola… Continue reading
Y’see, this blog post was supposed to be all about the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S4, right, but since that’s not happening until 11pm in the UK (‘cos they’re unveiling it in New York, y’see), that post will be happening tomorrow. So, that leaves me with a gap to fill today, and I’ve found just the thing to talk about.
The reason being that when I read about it, I nearly fell off my chair laughing.
