The next iteration of the iPhone could see Apple moving away from the 3.5 inch display screen they have favoured over the last few years, and in its place will be a screen of super-sized proportion, which many of the handset’s Android competitors already boast.
This is according to an insider, of course, who spilled the beans to Reuters, and there was talk of a massive 4.6 inch display for the next iPhone model.
The same high-density retina display, as seen on the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S, will be present too, so there’s nothing to worry about there!
This larger handset, rumoured to be launching in Q2 of this year (yes, just 6 months after the launch of the iPhone 4S) will bring Apple in-line with the latest range of Android smartphones, some of which sport 5 inch displays, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note, and are more of a phone/tablet hybrid (or a ‘phablet’ if you will).
We’ll bring you more on this as and when it develops but, for now, stay tuned!
A rather startling discovery has been made by a team of researchers at a University based in Purdue, USA.
The team has found that those annoying pop-up ads within your Android apps are not simply annoying, oh no, they also consume up to 75% of the app’s total power consumption!
This was uncovered using an energy profiler, EProf, which can analyse the power consumption of a device by monitoring each and every app and the research team used a Nexus One running Android 2.3 as a test subject. The apps tested include Angry Birds, FreeChess and the New York Times.
While testing Angry Birds, researchers found that only 20% of the total power consumed by the app was used to run the game, the remaining 80% was used to display the ads.
Sadly, there is little you can do about it apart from buy paid versions of the app that won’t serve up ads, but in future we’re hoping that developers will take heed and find another way to make money other than serving up battery-sapping adverts!
An image of the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been leaked online, prompting rumours that the handset could be announced before the month is out.
The snap, sourced by Phone Arena, shows a handset with the same super slim form factor and plastic exterior as the best-selling Galaxy S2.
However, in keeping with the recent smartphone trend, Samsung has dispensed with front-facing physical buttons in favour of purely touchscreen ones.
The screen appears extended too, and backs up rumours that the S3 will feature a super-sized display thought to be about 4.8-inches.
Text visible on the screen in the image suggests that the device will make its debut on 22 March, although as Phone Area suggests, the image does someone smack of a Photoshop mock-up.
There’s only one way to find out, and it looks like all will be revealed next Thursday… or not, as the case may be!
Samsung has announced a budget-friendly tablet device which runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich!
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 features a 7 inch slate, runs on ICS, and also boasts a three megapixel camera, a front-facing shooter, 16GB/32GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 1GB RAM, plus a host of connectivity options including WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and HSPA+, all at an entrey-level price point of €320.
It has a slightly thicker profile than the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, its successor, plus the CPU is slightly lower at just 1GHz instead of 1.2GHz. Let’s just hope it’s going to be heading for the UK!
Reports suggest that Samsung may be postponing the launch of the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S3 until the second quarter of 2012 in an attempt to allow consumer demand for the iPhone 4S to subside.
It has been widely anticipated that the Korean giant would unveil its new flagship device at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) next month, which would be in keeping with the last two years which saw the release of the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S2 respectively.
But according to supply chain sources, a number of companies, such as Samsung, could be planning on holding back their new handsets to avoid a head-to-head battle with the iPhone 4S… still going strong after being released late last year.
A report claims that the group, which allegedly includes HTC, Nokia and LG, could postpone their phones until the second quarter of 2012, raising the prospect that the S3 won’t show until early April at the earliest.
So all you Android fans out there will just have to hold on a little bit longer… however I can imagine the reward will be well worth it!
According to recent reports, Samsung is to unveil a new addition to its Galaxy Tab range of Android tablets at MWC next month.
A German technology has revealed that the as-yet unnamed tablet will pack an 11.6 inch screen that makes it the largest Android slate to date.
Another change to the Samsung norm is stylus support (as sported by the HTC Flyer) and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.
The new tablet will also pack a 2GHz dual-core Core Exynos 5250 processor.
Reports are in and it looks like the Amazon Kindle Fire has taken the lead with suggestions that the device sold no less than 6 million units in Q4 2011! This is certainly going some considering that the tablet isn’t even available globally yet!
With each US Kindle Fire sold for $199.99, an alleged $10 loss is made on each tablet, however this is said to average out to a $10 profit following the purchase of add-ons, such as apps and eBooks.
Set to be released in the UK in January 2012 (a date which we can safely kiss goodbye to for now!) the Kindle Fire is set to bring in an estimated $67.2 billion in 2012!
Samsung celebrates an extremely successful 2011 as it breaks it’s own record!
The Korean manufacturer has broken its previous record with a total of $4.7bn profit for the last quarter of last year.
According to a recent report, the sale of the Galaxy range of smartphones which have really made Samsung’s year. The report by analysts estimates that Samsung shifted 36.5 million phones between October and December of last year.
But which phones are the hero earners? Well, obviously the hugely successful Samsung Galaxy SII is a clear winner and, with versions subsequently being released in White, and also Pink, it looks set to continue its supreme reign of popularity.
The phone/tablet hybrid, Samsung Galaxy Note, was another best-seller for the company.
Nokia has published its annual interim report for 2011 and it reveals that the Finnish giant is losing out across the board.
Nokia’s operating profits are down a massive €1.4 billion, with Q4 seeing a 56% loss compared to the same quarter in 2010.
There are big losses in all of Nokia’s sectors year on year, with a 13% drop in mobile phone sales and a 27% drop in the amount of smart devices sold.
One positive point is that Nokia has reported sales of its Lumia devices, such as the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710, now total more than 1 million units.
However Nokia intends to appear at the forthcoming Mobile World Congress event, in what will be its first appearance in three years… could this mean that things are finally on the up?
If rumours are abound then you can be sure that Apple is never far away… and this time, it seems that a new iPad from the fruity manufacturer could be on the cards.
According to a Japanese website, Apple is to be holding a special event at the beginning of February where there is a strong possibility that the next iteration of the popular iPad tablet will be announced.
This would correspond with what has happened in previous years as the previous two iPad models have been announced on 27 January 2010 and 2 March 2011 respectively.
There have also been reports of the iPad 3 being ‘spotted’ at the recent CES event in Las Vegas, supposedly boasting a quad-core processor and a high-res display, but until we see hard photographic evidence, I’m afraid all we have is mere speculation!
